I am an engineering major who will be a sophomore this fall and I also want to complete the pre-med requirements. In order for me to finish them in 4 years, I need to take chem at my local community college this summer. I have a summer internship that is going to take up 40 hours a week of my time, so I am planning on just breezing through and getting a C in the class so the credit will transfer over, and then doing orgo and my other science courses at the university level. Will this C come back to haunt me? Will med schools see it and factor it into my science GPA or will it just be on my regular transcript as a transfer credit? Thanks.
Every college level class you’ve even taken (including co-enrollment classes in high school) must be reported to AMCAS or AACOMAS and all grades will be used to compute both your GPA and your sGPA.
So yes, any Cs you earn at the CC will haunt you.
You should strive to get A in EVERY med school pre-req. The way you expressed yourself is the quickest way to disqualify in med school apps. AND the intern you are planning, if it is not medicine related, it will haunt you in med school application as well.
All college grades COUNT, no matter where/when they’re taken.
If you have to take Gen Chem 1 at a CC, I don’t see the big deal since you’ll be taking Chem 2 and the Ochems at a Univ. I feel the same about Physics. If you take Physics 1 at a CC, but then take Physics 2 at a Univ, that would probably be totally fine.
The rule of thumb is that med schools want to see proficiency at a higher level at a Univ.
This is another classic example of engineering major with pre-med. Engineering has very rigid course sequence, which means very little room for error (ie, if retake is needed). Any post-high school course in US must report to AMCAS, so yes the grade at CC will count.

I missed this part about the plan to not work hard and just getting a C in it.
BAD idea for a couple of reasons…
- YES, it will count in your science GPA and will HURT that science (and cum) GPA
2). Getting a C in a community college course makes you look like a weak student.
