Do Medical Schools look at Medical Records?

Long story short: I accidentally took too much Tylenol (I had a migraine, was drowsy, wasn’t thinking clearly and took too many over the course of a day). I wound up in the ER for a night because of an overdose.

Is this going to affect my medical career in anyway? Should I be concerned? I’ll have a “accidental drug overdose” listed in medical records…which sounds terrible. I have never had any other health problems before.

I have already been accepted in med school, but I’m not sure if I should “update” them about this.

If they didn’t ask YOU for it then they can’t go digging for it. HIPAA to the rescue!

Given that it wasn’t even a suicide attempt I see no reason to bring it up - even when it eventually comes time to obtain your license. Just learn your lesson regarding your own personal health.

This scenario was even mentioned to us during our neurology orientation as something to be aware of (someone accidentally taking too much acetaminophen via excedrin that is). Even if you did have to disclose it, I doubt anyone would be that concerned.

Gothya- thanks! I won’t bring it up at all then. And YES, definitely learned a big lesson from it.
