I have been recently been looking into getting a MFA in creative writing (fiction) and was wondering how much rankings actually mattered? While my main goal is to be a novelist, i understand that teaching would most likely be what i would need to do to support myself until i hit it big (hopefully haha ^_^). Would the rankings really matter when looking for a job, or are rankings for MFA programs not as big of a deal as they are for say law school? Thank you.

They matter a lot. Anything outside of P&W top 50 is not worth the time if your goal in attending is to teach and/or get published. It’s more important if you want to get published than if you want to teach. Agents look at the top schools, particularly Iowa. If you just want to have the experience and work on your craft, you can look outside of the top 50.

They matter like any other rankings matter. Just make sure you’re going because it’s a good fit for your style and goals, not just the highest ranked school you got into
