I heard that Virginia itself is a "redneck" area. Is this true?!

"Virginia" is way too large to catagorize like that. Charlottesville is quite yuppie-fied...the area surrounding it is, however, a bit more backwoods.

Depends on where you are. Northern Virginia is basically an extension of DC. Even going down to Charlottesville, you don't get that much of that "Southern" (sorry, I'd feel mean for saying "redneck") feeling. Further south around Richmond (note: not the city/suburbs) and the NC border...that's a different story.

I live in Albemarle county but go to school in Charlottesville. There is a HUGE difference between the county and the city in terms of how southern - aka redneck - the areas are. Also, the city is a lot more liberal than the highly conservative county. Won't really matter if you're a UVA student though, only thing in the county of interest to y'all is Foxfield... and that's only twice a year :)

Uh, what's "foxfield"?

foxfields is a big horse race event twice a year, it's huge at uva-- pretty much a blowout with just lots of fun and drinking. some people go all day and never see a horse.
