Maybe if you want to work on the East Coast. If I go to Duke and come back to California to work, I don't know. My dad went to Duke, and he said when he had interviews they'd be kind of like "Oh Duke, where's that?" but then he'd mention CalTech (where he went to grad school) and their eyes would sort of light up with recognition. But then I really wouldn't make a decision based on what a few prospective employers might think... I must be able to find a job somewhere?

Heh, at my school most students don't particalarly care if someone gets into say, UCLA or Berkeley, though it's almost impossibly for us to (being in SC); but Duke is pretty hyped up, I think. Emory a little less so, and the HYPM+S are about on the same level. I think most people consider UPenn and Brown Ivy too....

because they are ivy

My brother is an engineering major at Duke. We live in a very rural upstate NY town- not many students go to big name schools. That being said, however, many heads turned when he got in. Some people even refer to Duke as the Ivy of the South! My grandfather, who was the head of an engineering department for a world-wide mechanical contracting firm in Boston was thrilled for him. (Of course my parents were thrilled as well - both went to RPI). The people who matter when it comes to getting jobs and grad school know the value of a Duke education. I just got accepted myself but I am unsure if I will attend because of some of my other options. I really don't believe that in educated circles that Duke is only known for basketball - quite the contrary! Oh, and by the way, my brother absolutely loves it there! He has to work very hard but he LOVES the culture of the school.
