Do most schools include electives in GPA?

Like is it most common to include them?

I don’t think so. I think many schools recalculate GPA and take electives, religion classes, and PE out to get a real GPA for the English, Math, Science, Social Studies courses.

That said, my kids’ flagship doesn’t take any courses out, but that is unusual.

What school is that?

I know U of M doesn’t take electives out.

Is the OP referring to HS or college? Most high schools include all the electives in the cumulative GPA. Once a transcript is submitted for college apps, some colleges recalculate the HS GPA and omit PE, keyboarding, and other non-academic classes. However they do look at the class rank which is based on the HS cumulative GPA.

Once at university, all the courses are included in the GPA, whether they are electives or not.

I am referring to the often-recalculated high school GPA that college admissions committees will look at when deciding whether or not to admit a prospective student. Is it more common than not to take out electives (such as art, PE, nutrition, health, economics, lifeguarding, earth science, robotics, anatomy, etc.)?

Economics, Earth Science, Anatomy, and Robotics (maybe) sound like real classes.

I think some colleges don’t bother recalculating your GPA; they just look at your grades in general–how you handled difficult classes, whether there is an upwards trend, etc. They probably don’t care about a B in a wellness class though.

Haha, freshman year I got a B+ in a Foods and Nutrition course

my high school includes all electives in GPA except for gym. you just have to get a 60% in gym to go on to the next year

I think all high schools take them into account when calculating the gpa. Top colleges then look at the transcript as a whole and recalculate the value without taking the electives into account.

Do they actually take the time to do that!?

It depends on the college. When my sister went on her college search in Massachusetts and my parents dragged me along, I remember UMass of Amherst does recalculate GPA. I also remember that Harvard doesn’t because if they did it would be “a full time job.” I would suggest looking at the policies of the individual colleges that you are considering, rather than colleges in general.

Where does one find these policies?

do you know which schools take them out? all the ivies?
so art, pe, and bible wouldn’t be counted right?

From what I understand, it depends on the school. Overall, it seems like they keep them in. Harvard apparently told a CCer that they don’t because “that would be a job in itself.”
