Hello. I applied to two colleges Early - Boston College and UVA. I recently was invited to Boston College as a finalist in their Presidential Scholars Program, and was accepted to UVA as an "Echol's Scholar." Jefferson Scholarship information has not yet been released.

I was wondering if this says anything about my admission chances at the ivies whose decisions I am anxiously awaiting (Penn, Columbia, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell). Though I don't know exactly how competitive each of these programs are, I was wondering if they might be competitive enough to give me more confidence in my other applications. Everyone speaks of some "intangible quality" in an application which is impossible to discern using statistics or EC lists - does this grant some credit to the idea that my application MAY have hit the target in this respect?

If anyone has any experience/thoughts, I would appreciate it. If you want to know more about my application, I posted a chance thread a month or so back that is probably accessible via my profile. Thanks!

Seriously? Ivies are so hard to get into. No comparison with UVA Or Boston. Even though those are good schools, it’s still not the level of ivies
Sorry for my rant. Congrats btw(:

College applications at the top schools unfortunately are not predictable. You may get into one and others may ignore you. Otherwise, someone considered really good may be admitted at all schools and that is not usually the case.

Congratulations on your Echols scholar status.

Ivies are a reach FOR EVERYONE - even Presidential Scholars Program/Echol’s Scholars invitees. But don’t let that discourage you: you already have great options, and it’s not even February. Congrats and good luck!

I suppose that is what I knew all along - the process is inherently, unbelievably, inexorably subjective. So I suppose my question now is, why does this thread exist? If nothing is predictable, it seems like its only purpose would be to allow nervous high school students to worry over a process that is as much luck as it is merit. I don’t mean to be cynical - it just seems like a futile exercise. Also - thank you for the thank you’s!

Spike, I would say sure, your early results bode well for Ivy admission. You chose your words carefully: these awards don’t “all but guarantee” Ivy admits, they don’t indicate that Ivy admission is “in the bag,” but they do bode well.

And I think the Chance threads exist because no one can resist asking the question. Good luck to you in April.
