My friend just got declared a QuestBridge finalist and has ranked Yale. Because we’re from New Haven and she’s received this scholarship, does she have a better chance at admissions to Yale than I do?
Maybe. Is your high school a New Haven Promise school? http://newhavenpromise.org/scholarship/new-haven-public-schools/
Yes
If you looked at New Haven as a city and another city with relatable/near-identical/identical population vs the students accepted from the respective cities, you would notice that there is a greater proportion of students from New Haven. So yes, you do have some advantage being from New Haven, whether it’s because the city is impoverished, your circumstances, etc.
^^ Are there a greater no. Yale alumni, faculty and admistrative children in New Haven? Perhaps that accounts for some of the greater proportion of students.
I think it depends on your sending school in New Haven. In recent years most of the acceptances have been from Cross, New Haven Academy, Career, ESUMS and Coop. Hillhouse seems to be shut out all together. So if you are from any of the schools listed that is a plus. I have also heard that those who participated in the Schaffer summer program the summer after junior year are looked upon favorably. Do any of these apply to you OP?
At least with the New Haven promise, it seems that the Promise only covers public universities?
For private universities and colleges the grant is $2,500/year.
For in-state public schools it’s full tuition.

There is some discussion about allowing Promise to be applied out of state. Currently, students going out of state become nominal Promise scholars and can get the cash if they transfer in-state through their sophomore yesr.
At the high school I know, customarily 2 to 4 of the top students get into Yale. This year it was faculty children, but it varies from year to year.
Academic credentials aside, I think Yale has an interest in fostering a local elite with ties to the institution. It doesn’t hurt to have alums on the Board of Alders when Yale is on the agenda.
Agreed. Our son attended high school in a private School in New Haven( Hopkins school) where 13 students in his graduating class got accepted to Yale. Of the 13, he was the ONLY student whose parents were not affiliated with Yale in any way.
Yes.
