Is this the first time Dwight Schrute has been quoted on CC? Or anywhere, really?
Re: "Shoes can be white, off-white, or nude in color. "
Wasn’t there recently a big discussion here about “nude” color, along the lines of not everyone (even at New Trier) in the nude being the same color?
John Grisham lives up the road from me. I would not know him from my mailman.
Nude shoes was in the WSJ last week
@barrons, I find John Grisham to be an entertaining writer, but mostly I find him to be a very handsome man. If he lived near me, I would make sure I looked better than my current standards when I left the house. And, yes, I know he is happily married, but still…
We had a commencement speaker when I graduated from high school many decades ago. This was a rural high school in central Oregon, and the speaker was the TV weatherman from the Portland TV station.
He gave a good speech full of amusing anecdotes. He said that off camera people often try to make the on-camera people break up and laugh during live segments. For example he said that when he is standing in front of the big weather map he is shown on TV only from the waist up. So once the director or somebody crawled out on his hands and knees during that segment and rolled the weatherman’s pant legs up to his knees - all the while he had to stand there and keep talking about the weather with a straight face.
Trying to be trendy?

I wasn’t talking about knowing what Scott Turow or any other author looked like. I was talking about knowing who “Scott Turow” is. Someone had posted the following:
I consider all of those people pretty famous, but Turow has had a couple quantums more mass-market success than the others. So I was surprised the poster had never heard of him before. (Actually, I would expect most CC posters to know who Bobbi Brown is, too.)
I would expect most users here to know who Bobby Brown is; I would expect relatively few male users to know who Bobbi Brown is.
I’m also in the group that didn’t know who Scott Turow was until Googling. However, I knew Rainn Wilson immediately, and recognized the “do not be idiots” quote, although I would have preferred to see him start the speech by slamming his fists on the podium and shouting “blood alone moves the wheels of history.”
The most popular seasons of The Office had ~10 million live US viewers per episode. When you consider worldwide viewership, syndication which is still active today, 200+ episodes over 9 years, … I’m sure many times more than the live US viewership are familiar with the main characters from The Office, especially one as memorable as Dwight Schrute . Some also know Rainn from other TV shows or movies, including some in which he was the lead character. In contrast, it’s my understanding that Turow’s popularity peaked in the 80s and 90s. Younger persons are likely not as familiar with his books. I see that Turrow’s books only have a few hundred reviews on Amazon, while books that inspired popular recent TV shows often have 10k+. Of the 4 alumni, Turow has by far the least Internet presence.
male, here, and yes, I am familiar with Whitney Houston’s daughter.
Assuming you’re serious, you just added a data point to my earlier hypothesis. ![]()
Bobbi Kristina Brown was the daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. The New Trier alumna named Bobbi Brown mentioned in this thread is a makeup artist who co-founded Bobbi Brown Essentials.
I thought it was Whitney Houston’s too until I googled and found out she was a person in the makeup industry.
Funny because Bobbi Brown make-up is intended for the age group that uses this forum. 40/45+
Funny - of the famous alums mentioned:
I had heard of everyone EXCEPT Scott Turow and Liz Phair. I’m a huge fan of The Office, and enjoyed the comments from Rainn Wilson.
I don’t find knowing everyone except Turow and Phair too surprising since that’s nearly identical to the order Google Trends and similar web measures give for the alumni. The specific Google Trends numbers below represent the relative average Google interest in the United States over the past 12 months, excluding very brief bursts:
- Ann-Margaret -- 36
- Rainn Wilson -- 31
- Charlton Heston -- 22
- Bobbi Kristina Brown -- 20 (27 if you include burst for the Bobbi Kristina TV movie in Oct 2017)
- Bobbi Brown -- 20
- Rock Hudson -- 19
- Rahm Emanuel -- 12
- Liz Phair -- 6 (13 if you include the burst for Billboard interview in April 2018)
- Scott Turow - 3
Worldwide, results were very different. Bobbi Brown dominated nearly every country outside of US and Canada often getting far more Google interest than everyone else combined, giving her by far the highest worldwide total. Rainn Wilson led Canada.
