in regard to the supplement essay (the required one)- does one page mean double or single spaced? becaue single spaced 1 page=over 600 words, which is longer than most common app essays :/

^good question, I normally double space my essays, so I would like to know about this as well.

However, I would assume it’s double spaced one page, because normally most schools only give you a character limit on their “why ___” essays.

me too I’m curious to know. I submitted mine, but it’s single spaced one page.
Luckily I believe it is substantive hehe :D

Everyone at my school did single spaced, and 12 of us were accepted to Penn lol.
You wouldn’t be able to get a lot of words in with double spaced on one page…

^^^TWELVE got in? How many applied?

Well, as Penn was not my top choice, I don’t know much about it, aside from it’s amazing business program… but that’s just general knowledge. I’ll probably end up typing up a double spaced page.

Curious… what did you guys write about that it took you a full page single spaced? That’s my entire common app essay!

@yuenie- What school do you go to jeez!! agnes irwin? haha

@cadillac- I talked about two organizations (“communities”) and went into detail about what i’d contribute. then I talked about how id contribute to the larger penn community by serving on student government, and I talked abuot how id contribute my student council experience as president of my high school class. yeah the essay is a little bland, but its written directly and gets my point across.

HonorsCentaur: yuenie probably goes to Stuy or a similar top school where everyone applies to Ivies. I have a friend who goes there, and when she tells me about the bumber of acceptances/applications to top schools I’m shocked…but you have to remember it’s probably different!

By the way, congrats yuenie!

mine was about 900 words, so it was actually over a page single spaced and i ended up changing the font to make it fit, so i guess they’re really not that strict about the limit lol

I wrote about ben franklin,my visit, study abroad, my experiences and what I can offer to Penn, and a Confucius quote

Thanks everyone! I guess my school is somewhat like Stuyvesant… it’s the best in the tri-state area (ranked 45 this year by US News & World Report, which makes me happy!) but definitely not renown at all like Stuyvesant. Mainly only people in Philadelphia and surrounding suburban areas know it.

@ Honorscentaur & Stupefy: About 15 people applied ED for Penn, and maybe 1 or 2 more I didn’t know about. By the end of the RD cycle, usually close to 30+ people at my school end up going to Penn.

I’d felt pretty confined if I could have only written one page double space for the supplement. I opened up the essay with a current global issue, introduced why I wanted to be part of the community I chose, told the reasons why I like this community, and ended with how I would contribute to it.

my essay was two pages, single-spaced but looking back on it I feel like an idiot. I could have probably cut it down to one page, but I didn’t have time. I was admitted, so I guess Penn liked the enthusiasm.

Mine was actually two pages single-spaced, and I got in anyways. In the end, all that matters is that the length is appropriate for the substance. If you’re wasting a page and a half saying nothing specific, then don’t bother. But if you can show that you will contribute something to Penn and you happen to exceed the word limit, then it is what it is. I would say do your best to stay within the limit, though.

i just wrote a very frank “why penn,” with highlights about my visit and some awkward coincidences between penn and me. mine is one page single-spaced.

One paged single space will do the trick shrug

mine was 1000+ words (1.5 pages). i am now huntsman '14! :-D

for the record, I think that sukotto, akkipenn, and I are exceptions to the rule. so writing over the word limit won’t confer a benefit. just sayin’
