No, they are called private to contrast with the public messages you post in the forums, which can be read by the public. Notice the following from the TOS:
“You acknowledge that CollegeConfidential.com reserves the right to monitor any and all information transmitted or received through CollegeConfidential.com which may be examined, recorded, copied, and used in accordance with our Privacy Statement.”
If you are really that concerned about mods reading your PMs, just send someone your AIM name or something. Unless you are talking about scalding Roger with hot cheese or something immensely liable to this website, I wholeheartedly believe that noone will read your PMs unless someone complains of harassment.
PM is ussualy used to abbreviate Prime Minister… lol

We don’t read PMs - however, if you get a problem PM (solicitation, offensive, etc.) there is a “report” link that you can use to send a copy to the staff.
