I applied here for the creative writing and because I have both parents who are alums. I know I'll be getting the miniscule alum grant, but.......

The problem is this school is $40,000(!) for out of state. Yeah, we moved out of Iowa.

I've got 31 ACT, and about 3.4 GPA. I've heard zip so far, other then my admission that came months ago.

Any info would be appreciated, I'm NOT paying $40,000 to go here.

It is not 40k. We are OOS and after a 4k scholarship we pay 27k including room and board in the residence halls.

You will qualify for the National Scholars award with no further applications. That’s about 4k right now. You are welcome to apply for the Old Gold/Presidential Scholarships to get big money. There are also a number of awards for those in particular groups. Full schollie info is here:

Thanks so much for the reply. You were indeed correct, I overstated the OOS cost.

It seems that I missed the GPA requirement by 0.20, as a 3.6 is necessary for the scholarship you mentioned.

In any event, considering the other acceptances I’ve received it does not seem like the family tradition will continue even if I do receive the award you mentioned.

What the devil has happened to tuition costs in this country, and why? A critical issue that I discussed in my application essay for other schools.

I’m curious: when you said that the cost was 27k (including the scholarship), are you referring to the total cost of attendance (eg. tuition, room and board, personal expenses, books, travel)?

SOC,
I should’ve pointed out that I never include books, expenses and travel as each school uses different estimates for these and since I figure they’re likely to be the same across the board I just leave them out. OK for comparison purposes but it does leave my estimate a little low. Sorry for omitting that detail.

I checked my Spring semester bill and here are actual numbers FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR:

$23,911 Tuition
$5363 Room
$2665 Board
($4240) National Scholars - this increases proportional to tuition increases

($1500) Engineering Excellence (one year only. Similar schols for other majors exist)

$26,199 net

Now the link you’re looking at is for NEXT year’s fees which are, of course, higher. I think its estimate for books is high by a few hundred but personal expenses are about what we spent. Travel is higher than our actual.

Your out-the-door cost to University of Iowa will probably end up around $30K for next year after your Nat’l Scholars Award, which should be around $4500 as the award goes up with a rise in tuition. Still cheaper than almost any Big Ten school OOS.

Wife & I are both alums, D1 attended & is now in med school, D2 didn’t get the Old Gold or Presidential scholarship with a 3.97 and a 32 ACT, so she attended elsewhere. I was in the Writer’s Workshop for awhile back in the '70’s, and it was wonderful. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Scholarships wise, Iowa is not bad based on my experiences with my kids, they do give scholarships, but how much you will get is based on your academic performance on high school as well as standard test score(s). For both of my kids, going to iowa is cheaper than going to our instate flagship university.
