Do parents come to Summer Orientation?

One of my parents are going to take me to summer orientation, so...I'm wondering.

The first day, there’s a family orientation if they want to sign up for it (I think it’s $25? per person? but that could be totally wrong). But they don’t stay with you all three days, besides if you decided to get a hotel instead of rooming on campus during your orientation.

They have parent sessions on the first day. Your parents will get a letter in the mail about “Family Orientation.” Lots of useful information for parents who do not know much about UT. Optional programs for parents from about 10 til about 4 (if I recall correctly) and then if you wish you can meet up with your parents at the dinner.

I don’t think the 2009 schedule is up on line yet, but here’s the student orientation schedule from 2007. The 2008 schedule was similar. I think UT may have left it up on line accidentally, so they might take it down any time. If you want to have it to refer to, I would recommend you save the .pdf file.

Most parents leave after the first day if they go at all.

Agreed.
There is nothing on the schedule for the parents after the first day.
Parents who already know a lot about UT will not learn much more at “Family Orientation.” Hundreds of parents will be there, though.

I attended the parent orientation when my daughter attended hers several years ago. (The two are separate -parents and students will only see each other at the BBQ.) Students should encourage their folks to go because most of the sessions focused heavily on “letting-go” and the importance of NOT being a helicopter parent. Most parents found the sessions on financial aid, housing, and safety very helpful. University Federal Credit Union had reps there available to answer questions too.

I appreciated the credit union info because my d needed a bank account in Austin.
