I know that technically the ACT with writing is all you need to be considered at Yale, but does anyone get in with just the ACT with writing? How big a difference to subject tests really make in the admission decision?

Do you think they are lying to you when they say ACT with writing is sufficient? Have they laid a trap for the unwary ACT takers?

Stop worrying.

ACT with writing only, here. Didn’t even take the SAT or any subject tests (the schools I applied to had the same policy as Yale).

I think having good subject test scores to send can be a good addition to your app. I applied EA with only my ACT but got deferred. I sent in subject test scores after that and got in RD. There were surely other factors involved besides my subject tests, but I think they really aided in getting my deferral reversed.

It can definitely help, but it won’t hurt you if you don’t send them in for whatever reasons. I got a 35 on my ACT, and that’s all I wanted to show. Got a 780 on Math II and 740 on Chem, which aren’t bad, but may not have been up to par with other top Yale applicants. No worries!

Thanks everyone!
@alexcoconuts, I also got a 35 on my ACT and just wasn’t sure how much a couple subject tests, which I may or may not do well on, could help.
It seems like everyone on CC takes the subject tests, so it almost seemed like it must be some sort of unwritten rule that they’re pretty much necessary.
At any rate, when I don’t get into Yale I can just blame my lack of extra tests to console myself, haha. :)
