I'm a rising junior and am interested in Princeton among other schools. I'd always prefer a city/urban setting due to the amenities of a city. I was wondering if sometimes over the weekend if people headed down to Philly or NYC to party or hang out.

Yeah they do. Some people work there or intern there as well. It’s pretty easy… about 40-50 minutes away. The location in my opinion is good because you can still make a great day trip in the city, and then go back home to a place without all the congestion and discord of NYC overwhelming you at all hours.

I haven’t made the trip to Philly but the train to NYC is about 80-90 minutes (assuming you’re not travelling during rush hour when there’s an express train) and costs $33 round-trip. People definitely will go in for a Saturday or stay overnight but it;s probably not a good idea to do it too often since it is time-consuming and not particularly cheap.

I just graduated from Princeton this June.

I’m going to be perfectly honest, and say not really. People DO go into NYC and Philly. The residential colleges sponsor trip there to see Broadway shows and sporting events. People go into the cities for interviews constantly during job hunting/internship season. I’ve gone a couple of times to visit friends, and once for a friend’s 22nd birthday bar hop party thing.

But it is definitely not the norm. During the weekends, people will stay on campus and study/do homework, rehearse with their performing groups, practice with their sports teams, and go out to “The Street” (aka eating clubs).

Being close to NYC and Philly definitely has its benefits, especially when it comes to job recruiting logistics, but the social scene is definitely mostly on campus.
