Do you think that people go to school only to get money?
If not, what do you think is the alternative? Is it there passion to learn?

A lot of people do, sadly. I think there’s a recent thread over in Investment Banking about people studying that doing it for the money. But then there are those who just want to learn, or teach. Mostly, I’d say it’s a mixture of learning and being able to make a living.

For me, knowledge empowers me.

Some people do. Some people don’t. I don’t.

If I could get a job that I enjoyed that earned enough money to comfortably support a family, I wouldn’t even think about going to college. I’m going to college to learn how to do a job because that is the job I desire. There is no other reason than that (except for the women, of course)

Yes. We’re all greedy pigs.

Mine is a mix of both. Honestly, I’m looking to get into Investment Banking for the money, as well as the social life and the authority.

But when I get older, I’m going to look into being a math teacher or a professor because I like to teach and help people :)

" I think there’s a recent thread over in Investment Banking about people studying that doing it for the money."

No one would ever go into investment banking for anything other than the money. It’s an awful field otherwise.

“as well as the social life and the authority”

For the social life, I’d own a club and for the authority I’d rather be a judge or a North Korean Party leader.

^I figured she was joking because they have no social life, and unless you get to the top, no authority.

Lots of people do. I would venture that the majority of people pursue higher education because of the money, at least to some degree. I love learning, and I like the way knowledge empowers me, and I’d probably still go to college even if it didn’t mean as much financially. That said, if I want to give my kids anything close to what I had [and hopefully better- I want to send them to good schools through high school and pay for college], I have to go to college. So when It comes to choosing a major, well… I’m interested in several, but some pay better than others, you know?

Exit opps, which I guess is indirectly related to money.

Gotta get that paper to get that money. Some people like me go to college and study something they are passionate about. It just so happens that what I study makes a lot of money. There are jobs that don’t need a degree but you may get overlooked because another applicant has a degree. It’s almost becoming mandatory.

No, some of what I want is the college experience

Some want to learn. Others want to make money. In the end, the ones that went to learn are P.Oed about their minimum wage job.

I want to learn how to play this game, and get all the money. That’s what you learn.
