I heartily disagree with the old notion that you peak intellectually at 25 or so. I am far smarter today than I was in any other decade of my life. I know better how to learn and what to focus on. Nowadays, many of us feel (looking at old relatives and others,) that interest, genetics, health and luck can keep you going til sometime in your 80’s. At that point, the body tires and doesn’t have as much energy left for brain pursuits. How’s all that for a positive spin on aging?

But, personality and personal style do play a large role. Uninterested people are uninterested, at any age.
