Do People Really Steal Essays?

I've always wondered about this. Do people really steal other people's essays and use the exact same thing? If two people use the same essay and apply to the same college, would the college find out and contact the person's other colleges regarding the essay? I wonder if something like that has ever happened before.

I don't know about people stealing, but they say anything's possible. I wouldn't doubt it.

I do know that people probably buy their essays online. There are sites out there that charge so much per word or page.

The extent of people's sleaziness never fails to nauseate me. :(

it's ok, they'll fail when it comes to composing proper resumes and essays in university :)

They'd have to be really, really stupid to do that.

People really BUY essays online?! You've got to be joking...

Yup, they do. Seriously- google something like 'essays' or 'Shakespeare essays' and you'll find a ton of sites. Buying essays is definitly not a good idea, but I guess it's a good buisness. It profits off of student's laziness.

But i mean...wouldn't colleges pick up on people sharing/buying essays? In my opinion I think they should look a little closer at everyone's essays...

There's a site called turnitin.com that checks for plagarism all across the internet and peridicals and so on. College admissions don't use it, but high schools do (at least mine does).

Yup, my school uses something similar- mydropbox.com. Some teachers use it, some don't... I've found it's okay. Sometimes it said I plagerized stuff off of my fellow classmates when we just happened to write almost the same thing (after all, the essays were all on the same topic...).

yeah, at least i do, lol

^ i'm kidding

our high school uses turnitin.com. some colleges are also beginning to use turnitin

Yes, there are people who steal essays, including essays by CC members. That's why when people post that they want someone to read and comment on their essays for Ivies, so many people respond that they'd be willing to read those essays, yet after they get the essays never critique them.

Yes, that's exactly why so many people volunteer to read Ivy-bound essays. This is why it's a bad idea to post your essays, and it's also a bad idea to send your essays to people with low post counts. Some people only post here to say that they'll read essays.

Yes, it happened to me on this site. Don't ever post essays on this site, and don't ever exchange them with someone you meet on this site. I really regret doing it. The person didn't even mean to steal. But if you want to keep your thoughts and words out of other people's essays, don't let other people see them. There are plenty of people you can trust in the real world who can read essays for you--teachers, friends, parents, counselors, neighbors, etc.

yes thats exactly why i didnt post any of my essays... you can't trust people nowadays

I found it incredible that many (especially internationals) would ask perfect strangers on this board to read their essays, proofread them, etc. Apart from the dishonesty on the part of the applicant, it is risky. It is like handing over cash in your pocket to a stranger to count it for you. Why don't kids work on their college essays by themselves as they are supposed to? Colleges are not looking to read a piece of writing perfected with the help of a bunch of people...

I mostly just get mine proofread by friends (RL ones, of course xD) because sometimes I do make a spelling error or two. However, I doubt I'd trust someone on the net to read one of mine. I just don't know if I could take that risk.

The Penn Admission person who visited my school said that they use turnitin.com and most other colleges use it too.

that website frightens me. on my essay i used two adjectives from E.B WHites essays cause i thought it was clever, does that count as stealing?

Asking if people will really steal essays is like asking if people will really steal money. Of course they will.

If something is of value, some dishonest person somewhere will try to steal it.
