Do people really think USC is University of Spoiled Children?

It’s fine if you can’t tell the difference but it is racist if you state it out loud and proclaim no intention of becoming educated regarding the different cultures, which Sparkeye has done.

Here, Sparkeye insists that it’s fine to call Taiwanese individuals “Chinese” merely because he can’t tell the difference. Never mind that many Taiwanese individuals prefer to be called Taiwanese. Never mind that some Taiwanese individuals are OFFENDED at being called “Chinese”.

So as you can see, Sparkeye’s comment was in blatant disregard of other’s cultures and self-identity. Just because you can’t tell the difference between a Jehovah’s Witness and a Scientologist doesn’t give you the right to call him a Muslim.

It was very racist and as an Asian I was, indeed, offended by it.

What are you talking about? Just join some business clubs, do some internships. and you’ll be fine.

There’s a lot of jobs lined up for UCLA (or any other college) students when they graduate; but, of course, you’ll have to work for it.

You’re not going to get a job after graduation at USC merely by the USC name. You have to network, like your friend, join fraternities, and talk to people.

I believe a lot USC students are floating that story, to assuage things, to prevent USC from taking the total hit.

And, sentiment, I think I read that Sparkeye said he’s from one of the Chinese countries.

Oooh, nice sex-shaming from someone whose user handle is “teenmom.”

The girl in question was the USC male student’s GIRLFRIEND who attended UCLA. Nice try.

Let us not forget the great “Asians in the Library” fiasco from UCLA this year, too. Again, nice try – but crappy things happen at ANY college, high profile or not.

Ok guys, let’s not turn this into a bash USC/UCLA thread.

If it is to be, it is up to me…

to TeenMom55 and drax12:

Just to clarify, yes, the girl was from UCLA (Theta sorority) and the boy was from USC. Time to move on and off this topic. It is not reflective of the entire student body of either school

This is an outdated perception.

There are large groups of spoiled children at most private universities. USC just gets a name for it because it’s a joke with their initials. If they were “ULA” or something like that, then I doubt the joke ever would have been made.

“Taiwan” is the Republic of China, no?

Every school has it’s haters -__- I’m sure some students are great, others really are spoiled.

USC, spoiled? Whoever says that hasn’t met anyone who has been to an Ivy League school.

sentimentGX4,

“Here, Sparkeye insists that it’s fine to call Taiwanese individuals “Chinese” merely because he can’t tell the difference. Never mind that many Taiwanese individuals prefer to be called Taiwanese. Never mind that some Taiwanese individuals are OFFENDED at being called “Chinese”.”

hmm… First off, Sparkeye7 (me) is a Taiwanese, and former President of Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) and dealing with TECO of Chicago (if you guys even know what I am talking about…) for the students of Big Ten Universities in the Midwest as the head representative on regular basis. Sparkeye can tell most Chinese from Taiwanese from a mile a way (figurative speaking, more like 30 ft. away) even without listening to their accent or how they dress. I, simply observe!! And he is fine if non-Taiwanese people ‘mistakenly’ call him Chinese, mainland Chinese or any other Asian ethnicity/country for that matter. Why? Because he is known to be extremely chill amongst his friends (mainland chinese included) and super lay back. ;p

"So as you can see, Sparkeye’s comment was in blatant disregard of other’s cultures and self-identity. Just because you can’t tell the difference between a Jehovah’s Witness and a Scientologist doesn’t give you the right to call him a Muslim.

Please do not mix religion with a simple ethnicity identification. Do I label someone as a racist if he or she is able to tell the difference between a British from an American?? You (sentimentGX4) owe me an apology!

Georgia Girl,

USC Alumni Clubs in Asia:

Beijing
Hiroshima
Hong Kong
Hsinchu (Taiwan)
Indonesia
Kansai
Kaohsiung (Taiwan)
Mumbai
Nagoya
Pearl River Delta
Phillippines
Seoul
Shanghai
Singapore
Taipei (Taiwan)
Tokyo
Vietnam

Taiwan is a country slightly larger than the size of Hawaii (less than 1/10 of Japan, 1/270 of China by area and likewise ratio in population) and yet, 3 alumni clubs alone based on your most recent list!! Most probably don’t even know that there were USC alumni clubs in Taichung, Tainan, Taoyuan and Taipei County as well in addition to the 3 listed above… Geez, I feel old. =_=" Yeah, FYI, my former roommate went to USC and was the President of USC’s TSA. In short, I did acknowledge that these days USC is certainly on the rise academically, no? My responses were merely intended for OP’s question “Do people really think USC is University of Spoiled Children.” And I apologize if my responses were not everyone’s cup of tea and deemed as offensive… lol

“His implication that Taiwanese students who chose to attend SC were spoiled is rather offensive to these individuals.”

Well, my former USC roommate attended USC only because he was rejected 2 years in a row by UCB and UCLA… And if you must know, my father’s (a Professor) colleague sent his son to USC after a sub-par community college in Taiwan for Bachelor, Master and PhD. Of course, I am over generalizing to a certain extend, and this was a decade ago… Hence, I am sorry, but that was and still is the general perception amongst the majority of Taiwanese regarding to USC.

Oh, to be more specific, that kid (he failed National Entrance Exam twice) provided financial statement support of $1 million USD to USC’s admission office (his mom side is super wealthy…), along with excellent recs from his father’s connection as part of his application - which included a USC Taiwanese-American Professor (know that this was not an uncommon practice back then and USC was certainly not alone. Because I have known similar stories in the past for spoiled Taiwanese in BU, NYU and even U Penn). That was also why my parents rather me stay in the Midwest and attend the Big Ten public for undergrad education after high school instead of returning to California (where most of my people are) and hang with the spoiled Taiwanese (my middle school buddies) back then in the Orange County area. Of course, this was roughly 15 years ago when not many Taiwanese families were able to send their kids to America for higher education.

She could have been from UCLA, undoubtedly. The only way we’ll know now is if she were to come forward.

But the guy could be throwing off the USC administration to protect the girl if she does attend USC.

One thing, though, they seemingly can’t get the sorority straight. One president of another is denying she’s a member, and now, she’s a Theta.

Georgia Girl,

“This year the largest number of international students are from India. Since 2008 the four countries that send the largest number of international students to SC and enrolled have been China, Canada, South Korea and India.”

Ask any Taiwanese who reads 3 Taiwanese newspapers a day and perhaps speaks Taiwanese as I do will tell you that is because of the decline in Taiwan’s economic coupled with the rise of China in the last decade or so which reflected in drastic decrease in Taiwanese studying oversea (USC in this case) and increase in international students from China (the super wealthy ones, too). Statistically, as I had alluded and perhaps you can just give USC a call that in the past few decades (especially in the 1980s & 90s), Taiwanese were roughly 1/3 strong along with wealthy Japanese and South Korean as the main Asian International Students.

“You have pride in your school Ohio State. Why do you feel it necessary to make insulting remarks about another university?”

If by speaking the truth about the past as my way of responding to OP as to how USC got its infamous moniker makes me insulting others, then I am guilty as charge. All you have to do is prove me wrong in public. And I suggest no more PM from now on as I have nothing to hide. I stand by my comments and apologize for hurting anyone’s feeling because of it. I just can’t lie…

Drax,
Not to be mean, but it seems everytime you come on to one of these threads, you quickly turn it into a flame war. It was confirmed that the girl was from UCLA. I don’t look down upon UCLA for that. I just think you need to hush up and realize that there are people here who love their schools just as much as you do about UCLA. They willingly accept that there are some mistakes made in the admissions process by accepting persons with bad character. You believe that when one person makes one mistake at your school, then that can’t possibly be true because of this or that made-up excuse, instead of just accepting the fact and getting over with it. Georgia Girl was simply telling you to stop and check established facts before you make your own little opinion piece. <rant over=“”></rant>

If it is to be, it is up to me…

To be fair to drax, it was NOT confirmed in this thread the girl was from UCLA.

Unless someone provides a link from a reliable source corroborating the fact, it’s all rumor. (And this does seem like the kind of entertaining stuff students would make up, the story already as amusing as it is.)

^^Taiwanese ‘Dong Dong News’ on the subject

[‪USC rooftop sex fratboy in trouble after pics go viral (???)‬‏ - YouTube](<a href=“USC rooftop sex fratboy in trouble after pics go viral - YouTube”>USC rooftop sex fratboy in trouble after pics go viral - YouTube)

P.S. “sentimentGX4” still owes me an apology for calling me a racist! ;p

Any quick Internet search on the story will show that the girl, KT, was the one there and that she was subsequently scrubbed from the sorority ABC website and further confirmation that she was a UCLA student. I would suggest the greekchat thread as the story will not be very gossipy. I suggest we drop this now, as the story is mainly about two drunk college kids and has nothing to do with the thread. I AM NOT a USC student, and I hold nothing against UCLA. Shakes hands and ends debate and leaves thread

If it is to be, it is up to me…

^I actually DID do the internet search. “USC Roof Sex UCLA Girlfriend”. I came up with a bunch of comments from random posters (extremely unreliable). After some digging, I found exactly (1) non-major blog that cited the girl as being confirmed to be from UCLA but the link it provided to corroborate the fact was not authentic.

Without Googling for “UCLA girlfriend”, none of the top searches results discuss the girl at all. I’d invite you to link an article citing the girl was from UCLA if it is easy for you. (It’s very difficult for me and, in all honesty, I am leaning toward the opinion that it is rumor.)

EDIT: I’ve done further research googling “KT roof sex”. I refound the one blog which cited the girl was from UCLA. The link of the sentence “determined to be from UCLA” link back to a previous blog article that does not cite the girl from UCLA.

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2011/03/usc_roof_sex_ph.php</a></p>

It is a dubious confirmation the girl is from UCLA and the Google search was anything but easy. -.-

Regarding the relevance of the roof escapades to the original post, Wikipedia tells us:

"A spoiled child (also called a spoiled brat) is a child that exhibits behavioral problems from overindulgence by his or her parents. Spoiled children may be described as “overindulged”, “grandiose”, “narcissistic” or “egocentric-regressed”.

I believe the behavior of the Trojan Greek fits all of the adjectives used in the definition.

Q.E.D.

So does most Greek life. I’m not trying to be offensive to Greeks but there are definitely at least a few of those kids at every school in the united states. And, yeah, of course you can’t find a major blog about it, because by the time they would have determined who it was, no matter where the girl was from, nobody would care. Just like we should be doing. Can we go back to talking about alumni clubs? At least those flame wars were less heated.
