“Here, Sparkeye insists that it’s fine to call Taiwanese individuals “Chinese” merely because he can’t tell the difference. Never mind that many Taiwanese individuals prefer to be called Taiwanese. Never mind that some Taiwanese individuals are OFFENDED at being called “Chinese”.”

hmm… First off, Sparkeye7 (me) is a Taiwanese, and former President of Taiwanese Student Association (TSA) and dealing with TECO of Chicago (if you guys even know what I am talking about…) for the students of Big Ten Universities in the Midwest as the head representative on regular basis. Sparkeye can tell most Chinese from Taiwanese from a mile a way (figurative speaking, more like 30 ft. away) even without listening to their accent or how they dress. I, simply observe!! And he is fine if non-Taiwanese people ‘mistakenly’ call him Chinese, mainland Chinese or any other Asian ethnicity/country for that matter. Why? Because he is known to be extremely chill amongst his friends (mainland chinese included) and super lay back. ;p

"So as you can see, Sparkeye’s comment was in blatant disregard of other’s cultures and self-identity. Just because you can’t tell the difference between a Jehovah’s Witness and a Scientologist doesn’t give you the right to call him a Muslim.

It was very racist and as an Asian I was, indeed, offended by it."

Please do not mix religion with a simple ethnicity identification. Do I label someone as a racist if he or she is able to tell the difference between a British from an American?? You (sentimentGX4) owe me an apology!

Taiwan is a country slightly larger than the size of Hawaii (less than 1/10 of Japan, 1/270 of China by area and likewise ratio in population) and yet, 3 alumni clubs alone based on your most recent list!! Most probably don’t even know that there were USC alumni clubs in Taichung, Tainan, Taoyuan and Taipei County as well in addition to the 3 listed above… Geez, I feel old. =_=" Yeah, FYI, my former roommate went to USC and was the President of USC’s TSA. In short, I did acknowledge that these days USC is certainly on the rise academically, no? My responses were merely intended for OP’s question “Do people really think USC is University of Spoiled Children.” And I apologize if my responses were not everyone’s cup of tea and deemed as offensive… lol

“His implication that Taiwanese students who chose to attend SC were spoiled is rather offensive to these individuals.”

Well, my former USC roommate attended USC only because he was rejected 2 years in a row by UCB and UCLA… And if you must know, my father’s (a Professor) colleague sent his son to USC after a sub-par community college in Taiwan for Bachelor, Master and PhD. Of course, I am over generalizing to a certain extend, and this was a decade ago… Hence, I am sorry, but that was and still is the general perception amongst the majority of Taiwanese regarding to USC.
