Do Pre-Boards/Boards matter?

Do colleges ask for your Pre-Board marks once you have been admitted? If so should I be nervous going into them (that is should I prepare as rigorously as I have been for previous exams) or do they not give it much consideration.

Also, how much do Board marks matter? How close should I be to my expected score to be on the safe side?

Note: I fully intend to do well in both. This question is just for my peace of mind :D

Thanks in advanced!

Hi! Its funny how I had the exact same Q in my mind but didn’t take the effort to write it down on CC. As far as I know, boards i.e. your final transcript is an essential document to gain complete acceptance. As of now, all the universities that you get accepted by are ‘conditional acceptances’. An erratic decline in your 12th marksheet can hamper your chances of getting in(for real).
That being said, I haven’t seen any acceptance get revoked for poor performance. I am sure, the uni. knows the magnitude of senioritis and over-whelming joy of getting into a college.
I might be wrong, I am still in 12th and preparing for boards, so yeah.

That falls in line with what I’ve heard. Unfortunately I have heard of a few cases of applicants who were rescinded because of poor performance in their finals.
What about Pre-Boards? Most of my college bound friends are slacking off for their Pre Boards saying that colleges wouldn’t even receive their Pre Board grades. Is this true?

Yes, it true. They, dont look at your pre-boards. period.

Ok. I guess there’s no harm in studying for them either ways, since the effort you put in for your Pre Boards will manifest themselves in the Boards as well.
Still it’s good to know I don’t have to be worried for my Pre Board marks.
Thanks!

No. For already accepted colleges u will only need board result and it should not be extremly poor.

Just out of curiosity, define ‘extremely poor’

You need to send in your mid-year report, which, in your case, would be your pre-board results

^^but the CBSE doesn’t follow a semester system…It says so in my school profile:)

So what marks do Indians submit in the mid year report?

You have to submit your latest transcript with your mid-year report. That can be your pre-boards or an exam you wrote before that!!

In my opinion, if you get -5% from your predicted grades(in the International Supplement) or from your average grade - in your board exams, then it is fine. Anything lesser and you might have a problem. Then again it depends on the school you are applying to and the importance they pay to final marks!! :)

If u have paid the enrolment fees and to be on the safer side they are not going to cancel your admission even if u get really poor results unless u are talking about an ivy. Evening if u get 75 and u had predicted 95, they might put u on probation but just give the admissions office a call and be honest and explain why such grades and they accept u.

Okay. I scored about 75% in my preboards, particularly because they coincided with the last 15 days before application deadlines. I obviously couldn’t give a wholehearted effort. Should I explain it to them in the Mid-year report? And, does explaining it extenuates getting just 75% percent?

I got 75% too… but then my school profile explains that these grades should be about 20-25% less than boards!

my school just says that the internal exams are very tough and rigorous to keep students prepared:?

Well as we are International students, I don’t think so they would matter much.

^ Everyone’s does. Just remember - There is always that one guy who despite the strictness of correction gets a 80-90% in the internal exams and that is the person, colleges like Harvard, Dartmouth, etc. are looking for!! :)

I guess so, rishav… In any case I dont get my report soon, so I’ll tell them.My 11th marks were awesome even board standards so Im happy:)

^ What will you do for your mid-year reports?? As far as I know, they are compulsory!!

And lucky you! My 11th marks are as bad as my 12th - so nothing doing there!!

I think there is a column where u can tell them that it’ll come soon(I have to give them a date though:P
