depending on who teaches, the quality of edu. might vary significantly...

ALL profs are required to teach undergrads at cornell

that doesn't answer the question bongoboy.

isn't it all professors are required to teach at least 1 course in undergrad?

This is an important issue... can we get a definitive answer?

The freshman writing seminars are mostly taught by grad students.

Every other class I've had has been taught by a professor (usually one with a phD). The TA's are usually only responsible for holding sections and reviewing lecture material. I was disappointed to learn this semester that some of the lower level foreign language classes are taught by TA's.

Depends on the courses, but by and large, you are taught by professors.

Example:

I'm a chemistry major, and have been taught by professors in lecture for every single class. In labs, generally you are led by a grad student. Sections (recitations) are run by grad students, but you are not necessarily taught anything new by them, just go over HW, ask questions, etc.

More generally, you have profs for lectures, grad students for section.

99% of classes (the lecture) are taught by Professors. Graduate teaching assistants teach sections and recitation. These are basically guided review session designed to ensure you know the material and to allow you to ask questions that may not have been answered in lecture. They also spawn discussion and are very useful. Understand that grad students at top schools like Cornell are doing cutting edge research. In fact, though you may not want to believe this--grad students are often at the absolute razors edge when it comes to research and are often more in the know when it comes to hot topics in a certain field then their professors (particularly in the sciences).

Graduate students will also probably teach every lab course you will take. Teaching undergraduates is a vital part of graduate student education...but they don't want to sacrifice your own educational experience by making them teach large lectures...

Cheers,
CUgrad

by any chance, do you guys know about econ and chinese classes?

I believe for Chinese 109, there is only one legit professor and the rest are taught by TA's (at least that's what my friend told me). If you're lucky, you get the professor.

thanks norcalguy. i need more info though.
