Just wondering if kids usually get in touch with the roommate before purchasing bedspreads and other room decorations or if each does his/her own thing.

It doesn't make sense to "match" because it is likely they will be living with someone else the next year.

I wondered that same thing. When we were visiting colleges, we heard people talk about shopping for matching bedspreads with their new roommates, and I didn't think that sounded like a great idea. I think my daughter will want to use her bedspread from home so it still feels like her room. I just hope her new roommate agrees.

That sounds so sweet, but sort of 1950-1960 you know? Have you read She's Come Undone? She did that with her roomate, right down to matching curtains. Then again, her college essay was about why she idolized Tricia Nixon.

does this mean they make their beds?
:)

Mine would make her bed, I guess, if she'd ever learned carpentry.

(me, too. ;))

A lovely question, I think the answer has to be that they don't.

I love this quaint idea. I cannot imagine anyone at a metro school considering this....perhaps you should contact the Olsen Twins.....that would be a definitive answer I suppose. Do you have a twin? Do you dress like your twin? I just don't really understand this.

I believe pattykk has a girl. Girls may be different, but matching linens would be the least of the considerations in my son's room. You would be lucky if you could even see the bed under all of the junk piled around!

Easily solved::then build the wall.

http://rush68.net/~dave/crap/story.htm

the plans for my 15 yr olds room don't include anything matching as far as I can tell- and she doesn't even share it with anyone.
Her idea- green walls with indian print bedding- woven grass floor mat and bamboo blinds- then.... one wall mount her snowboard and have a shelf for sports trophies- another wall with her indian vanity with mirror and all her girly stuff- another wall with posters and such from hawaii..
I suppose on the remaining wall she will put up her LOTR and Orlando Bloom posters ?

You would be lucky if you could even see the bed under all of the junk piled around!
as far as I can tell my college daughter uses her desk to stack books on.
Her bed also has books in it and stacked along side it. She sleeps with her laptop- clothes she wore yesterday- clothes she is wearing tommorow.
It looks like a nest - that of course when she actually comes back to her room to sleep- one week during finals she told me she slept all week in the library.

This is the funniest thread title I've ever read on CC! (with apologies to the OP)

LOL. I am enjoying this thread too. Guess I was showing my age. Back in the day, my roommate and I went shopping for bedspreads together. My daughter also has a "nest," so I don't know why I even asked the question. Hazmat: I'm a Mom, not a Legally Blonde-type chick. I am sure the Olsen twins used a decorator in their humongous apartment.
Never mind, guys. I plead temporary insanity.

Hey......no foul no harm. I am glad you came to your senses..

my roommate and i freshman year never even mentioned it, but we actually showed up with the same blankets. Kind of funny if you ask me. my second and third year roommate had a purple lepord print blanket and i still had my original blue one. my roommate senior year had a blue blanket with a moon on it.. so we matched okay. It's no big deal.

Hazmat: I'll never forgive you for that link. Ugh. That poor kid was mentally ill, and his poor roommate should have called the authorities long before he did. Wow.

Matching bedsreads... to be so optimistic. (you can tell the jaded college parents are posting and burting your bubble about these cute rooms that you think they will have once you dro them off at school)

I am with EK, as to will they every see the bed? I think their room looked really nice on move in day then everything was up in the air. (they take pride in the fact that no one is going to make them clean their room).

Unless you kid is a real stickler for neatness, I give any room 2 weeks. Do you know how they live at home? Think about the happy dance you'll be doing once they go to college and you won't see their room.

The dorm is going to be their new home for the next 9 months. It will have a very "lived in" look. You will visit them, shake your head and glad that their mess has taken a reprieve from your house.

Our son wouldn't let us see his room when we came that first October for Parents Weekend.

some people do, some people don't. i def don't think most guys do.....i think generally people who go to colleges and room with a friend from h.s. generally try to match their stuff....but if you go pot-luck, it's too much effort. if you have your roommates contact info, you might want to call and just say hi and discuss who is bringing (if either) a tv, shower curtain, trashcan for bathroom, etc etc.......
