Every year I see many people paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars to just prep for the SAT..

But. Does it really help? Would it be more effective just study out of SAT prep books? Can you score a 2400 on the SAT I without additional prep classes?

And I also have another question: Currently, I have in possession the 2005 edition of the College Board Blue Book for the SAT. Should I get a more updated version? Because I heard that the content inside the College Board Blue Book is pretty much the same for everything after 2005.

Nooo. I took a kaplan prep course junior year. I learned absolutely nothing useful, it was a complete waste of 1200 dollars. Like the strategies for math were either plugging in numbers or working backwards. Yeah…

Self studying=good. You don’t need to buy the new BB, it only has new 2 or 3 tests. Basically everything on this thread was amazingly helpful. Be sure to read xiggi’s advice if you’re going to self study.

well i would recommend you take a class only if you score 1700 or lower usually but if you can get an 1800 with out really prepping for it its better if you just self study

It depends a lot on the course that’s offered. Some courses guarantee a score raise or you get your money back. You should try one of those courses because they’re pretty interested in keeping all the money that they got. Kaplan isn’t that great but I hear PR courses aren’t bad. Plus local courses are usually free, so try one of those!

The private course that I’m currently taking is incredibly helpful to me. It’s not like the crappy Kaplan courses that don’t actually teach you anything except for “tricks”. Although the course was about $700, I’ve probably raised my SAT score at least 100 points since the last 4 courses. It definitely depends on a lot of factors such as if you actually want to do it to raise your score.

Not sure whether it was because of the prep course or because I just got smarter over time (not bragging, just saying I was insanely immature and lazy fresh year), but 2 years of prep got my score up by about 400 points…

very first time I took PSAT, got an 1860
Final SAT score in end of junior year was 2260

but come to think of it, I wouldn’t have gotten that score without the prep class (For sure)
