i recently read an article about how schools might know where else you are applying? how might they know this? fafsa, css profile college board, common app?

they might use this information to make a judgement about your likelyhood to enroll and possibly waitlist you.

my daughter has been asked by reps and an interviewer about her other apps. what is the best response to this? short of.....none of your business.

If you tell them or if they find out that you’re applying to peer institutions, they certainly won’t hold it against you. Colleges know that an applicant would be stupid to put all of his/her eggs in one basket.

The only time a school might find a reason to waitlist you based on other schools that you’re applying to is if they get the feeling that you’re is treating their school as a safety, i.e. what has been called Tufts Syndrome.
