Do schools receive outside information about your school?

Like how it calculates ranks? etc. ?

Do you mean something other than the school report?

yes, on the counselor forms they are asked to explain that stuff

Didn't want to start another thread since this falls under the same category and all (sorry for infringing :) ), but what bout reputation for schools outside of the U.S. Would colleges know how rigorous those schools are or how they rank in their respective countries?

Probably not... there are tens of thousands of applicants... and God only knows how they even get through that many in a few months... I don't think they'll spend time laboriously checking up, unless your high school is instantaneously recognizable.

There are probably some high schools (especially in Asia) where the name alone does mean some recognition by the admissions officers (usually for academic rigour/past admits/etc...) in charge of international admissions. Raffles and Hwa Chong are two schools that come to mind in Singapore.

What do colleges look at about your high school?

Do they favor applicants who went to competitive, top-ranked high schools?
If you went to a top-ranked high school, do they give you more leeway for grades because it is harder to get good grades?

The school profile which goes out with transcripts and historical data from others who have applied and/or matriculated provides the key info.

The absolutely consider grades in context of your school. Your 4.0 might not make top 10% at your school while the next guy's 4.0 might be from a school where 3 kids in it's history have achieved a 4.0.
