After receiving access to my Wellesley portal, I discovered that Wellesley requires that students submit their first quarter grades. I'm very concerned, because I think my first quarter math grade will be a C+ or B- (I'm taking AP Calculus AB). In all my other classes (which are mostly APs), my lowest grade will be an A-, and I'll also have multiple A+s. Do you think Wellesley will admit or reject me based on my first quarter math grade?

Obviously other parts of my application are very important too. Based off of past years, my average grade in all classes is an A-/A. So basically, math is my weakest area, and AP Calculus has been challenging these past few months. I'm just getting used to it, however, so I feel like my grade can definitely improve over the course of the next year. Unfortunately, ED only looks at first quarter grades when making a decision, so I'm very scared. If I believe my extracurricular activities, test scores, and past grades are at Wellesley's standards, or even higher, should I be extremely concerned about my first quarter math grade?

Hi! I have a friend last year who applied to Wellesley ED and she has a C in AP Calc AB. And she got in! So I think you will be fine as long as your ACT/SATs and your GPA up until junior year are high enough.
I also applied ED this year :)

No college will reject you based on one bad grade one quarter in one subject. They are looking at the whole you the whole of your high school career. Relax, and learn some calculus without fear of rejection!

Hi I applied ED as well but I did not receive any username or password to a Wellesley portal. Is that a thing? I’m panicking now thinking that my application didn’t actually submit.

I do not think a “C” in AP Calc for a non STEM major would make much difference at Wellesley when your other grades are good and you have NOT been showing a declining grade pattern. First quarter grades can confirm that a student is getting less engaged in school work when followed by junior year grades that were dipping from freshman and sophomore grades.

However, to say, “No college will reject you based on one bad grade one quarter in one subject” is a bit too optimistic. A bad grade is a flag, and it could get a student rejected at the most selective schools where they are looking for any reason to cull the admissions pool. It does depend upon the school, how “bad” the grade is, and what the subject is. In this student’s case, the “C” might not have much effect, I agree.

@shoboemom, your first quarter grades and transcript from the last three years should be separate. My guidance department automatically sent grades after my first quarter ended in November. You can probably contact them about it since every school may be different.
