I think I know the answer to this and yet I occasionally hear people say that having a sibling at the school helps with your chances of being admitted. I doubt that. What do you guys think?

I, too, would like to know this. My sister went to U of I for 2 years.

i seriously doubt it. i would be very suprised if somone said otherwise.

Having a sibling at UIUC neither helps nor hurts. UIUC also does not consider true legacy (having a parent who graduated from UIUC) because far too high a percentage of applicants can claim it.

however if your siblings have graduated and made a donation, that's another story.

I don't believe it helps and yet I continually hear that it does. Wishful thinking. Both my husband and I graduated from U. of I. and now my first son is a freshman in Computer Engineering. I would like to think that might help my next son but...as I said...wishful thinking.

maybe if your sibling is a top graduate student in the program youre applying to or something

Top private schools consider sibling alumni/students as a slight positive, because the thinking goes that a family with two alumni is more likely to donate than two separate families. UIUC considers no such thing, simply because a large percentage of their applicants would likely qualify.

didn't the application have a special section to note whether or not you have siblings?

I remember the written application a few years ago had a section for sibling(s) input. Guess they did away with this on the Online version.
