Do they? I heard most of them look at English and math the most. I was wondering if there is some truth in that.

Yeah I heard that too

So does anyone know? It seems to me that Math and English scores are more important the science and reading scores because all the sites with college admission profiles show averages for english and math sections of the ACT for almost every school, but not the averages for reading and science.

bump......

that would be great news for me if that were true.

waiting for confirmation...

Yeah I too had the impression that higher scores on Math and English are favored. Many colleges release the inter-quartile range for Math and English scores, but not for science and reading. Actually I have never seen 25th/75th percentile scores for science and reading in any college admission profile.

Yes it's true that some schools release data on students' English and Math scores; however, that does not make them any more important than the other 2 sections. After all, the most important statistic of all is the overall composite, which is the most often released data regarding ACT scores by colleges. And in forming the composite score, Reading and Science play just as much of a role as English and Math. The majority of universities look only at the composite thereby weighing all sections equally.

There are some schools that only look at English and Math scores though. I think a list may have been formed on a thread on this site a while ago but I can't be sure.

But generally speaking, no, colleges do not weigh certain sections more than others.

Edit: In the case of applying to a special school like MIT it is possible that certain sections like math and science may be looked at more importantly, but still, the composite is what matters mostly.

Yes of course composite is the most important score and I am aware that many colleges do not even consider the individual scores of each section.

And your post about some school only looking at math and english scores is entirely new to me. Do you know of any guitarman89?

As far as I am aware, colleges weigh different areas of the tests depending on what kind of college/what programmes and degrees you are looking at. It depends on which fields/areas you are exploring.

If you are applying as a general undergrad, I am fairly certain their is no emphasis on any one section. Colleges value well-rounded applicants that excel in all areas that the standardized tests explore.

Well but I know colleges look at scores of each section of the SAT. And often, some colleges value some sections over others. I don't see why they won't do it for the ACT.
