I've heard this so many times, but I've never actually heard of a confirmed case of this.

Less so universities on the undergrad level and moreso on the graduate level or for jobs. Universities get thousands of applicants and will not have the time to Google everyone to find out if they have a MySpace or Facebook, and then scour the page for incriminating information; however, graduate programs and jobs are notorious for this. I know several people who have seen this happen within their graduate programs -- otherwise outstanding applicants got turned down because they had weird or bad pictures or information on their MySpace and Facebook pages.

To be on the safe side, you should set your MySpace or Facebook pages to private, take down any potentially incriminating information, or delete them all together.

In a professional setting as part of my work, I have personally heard the Director of Admissions at an Elite school say first hand that he does check some of the things on a student's my space page (in fact, he said that he had a applicant whose my space page he visited went to committee to advocate for the student). I heard another admissions rep from another top school who says, she does randomly google and check the my space pages of some of her candidates.

lol good thing i dont have one

I doubt they take the time to do it. But I've heard it's not uncommon for alumni interviewers to do google/check your myspace.

^ Northstarmom, a member here, is an alumni interviewer for Harvard, I think. She said she googles students before interviewing 'em.
