Do stats really matter?

I think all of the applicant stats matter very little in college admissions. I think the most important factors are where you’re from and your race… If you’re from an “outreach area” you have an infinitely better chance than if you’re from New Jersey. If you are an URM, the same holds. If I’ve learned one thing from looking at CC profiles of accepted students, it is that the numbers don’t really matter beyond a certain threshold.

The good thing about this is that it demolishes any ideas about people being smarter just because they go to School X. Yes, there are complete idiots at Harvard. Yes, there are geniuses at state schools.

I think the overall outcome of this is that:

 1. Society is going to begin to recognize that degrees don’t necessarily imply intelligence.
 2. Degrees from prestigious institutions are going to gradually lose their value, especially in the job market but also in the public perception.

Do you guys agree or disagree?

I notice where you posted this and I am wondering if you are a Penn hopeful or already a student at Penn???

so you're kind of saying the admissions game is kind of like how they cast MTV's "The Real World?"

ieh, i guess there's some truth in that. i'm a white male transferring to penn from south carolina. why do they want me?

I'm class of 09

Eh it is true that stats are harder to shell though for adcoms because at the higher-end schools, EVERYONE good has high stats, so it comes down to subjective factors/whether or not they think you are interesting enough/show enough interest in the school/etc.

I agree with this.
