Do Stern student need a laptop in class?

Do Stern student need a laptop in class? I am thinking about to buy a Net book for my daughter since it is lighter than laptop. Just want to know if this is necessary.

Is there any wireless connection in class/library? I heard there are no any wireless connection beside dorm. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks for your help.

there are totally wireless connections. certain classrooms might have spotty service. i’ve always had it in the Stern buildings. Bobst Library DEFINITELY has wireless.

i’m in Steinhardt and i used a laptop in every class except the obvious math/language/writing the essay type classes where it wouldn’t make sense to use one.

Thanks, missamericanpie. This is really helpful information.

BTW, is there wireless connection in dorm? Do we need to buy routers in order to make wireless connection?

Thanks for your help.

yeah, you’ll need a cheap router to have wireless. otherwise, the laptop will be tethered to the ethernet cable.

Thank you so much for all the info.

Wait, hold on, we’re allowed to run our own router? I thought that you weren’t allowed for security reasons.

people do it anyway. for the short term i dont plan on running a router myself, but probably later on in the semester i’ll get one.

people do it. i just register mine as a “desktop” and my laptop as a “laptop” with ITS. i play copious amounts of World of Warcraft, i NEEDED a router for my media major research. ha.

OT: ITS…ah man how much I hate them. the phone bank is full of idiots, idiots i say!

/ot

So I assume if it’s secured decently they don’t bother you?

They didn’t bother my brother when his network was unencrypted 4 years ago, I doubt they’ll bother you now.
