Do students get amazon prime the second year for free?

There is a great offer for amazon prime for students for one year for free. It looks like the second year is at a discount ($39 I think). Is this correct or have people been able to get a second year for free? Thanks.

You have to pay $39 to renew the Student Amazon Prime for the second year.

I just signed my D up for this. They get Amazon Prime shipping benefits (ie, free 2-day shipping) for 6 months for free. After 6 months (not 1 year) you get Amazon Prime for $39/year (regular price is $79/year). Note they will automatically charge you $39 at 6 months unless you opt out when you register. You need to give them the student email (with a .edu) to qualify. They qualify for the $39 for as long as they are a student, up to 4 years.

Guess they changed the offer after last year. I got it last September and it was a free year and then $39/year after that.

So far my ds has had no fees associated with his prime account, as far as I know. Hope I am not jinxing it!

I thought my son had it for a year, but thinking about it, I realize it was nine months because he got it around Thanksgiving and got an e-mail in July saying it would expire (the free part) in September. We’re going back and forth on getting it again with a different edu account or paying the $39 for it. I realize the latter is the honorable way to do it.

If you signed up immediately it was a full year/first year free then $39/year.
The free year/6mos gets you no free downloads, the $39/year does and it is renewable for up to 3 half-price years total (ie they assume you are a student for 4 years).

Both of my D’s used the free “student” Amazon Prime accounts last year. When they recently expired, I signed up for my own Amazon Prime account for $79. I was able to invite each of the D’s to become Prime members on my account. (Note that they kept their own Amazon account, it was upgraded to Prime on my invitation.)

Now we all get the free shipping, with the added bonus of Amazon Instant Video. We can stream to our computers, and onto the main TV (using our Roku box). There are quite a few movie/TV options that are free for Prime members.

For us it was worth the $79, since all three of us can benefit. I don’t think you can get the free streaming video with the student account.

You can get the free streaming video with the discounted student prime account. This is the e-mail my son got:

Does anyone know why the instant streaming for Tv is not free with the Prime acct? We’ve sent an email to customer service but hoped someone on here had an answer.

My daughter did upgrade to the $39/yr to get the streaming video and tv but it appears that the tv is not free

I had a quick look to see if I wanted to upgrade (I am a student so got the free shipping for a year - it was great!!) and the streaming video was not a selling point for me. From what I could tell as I think there are only a limited number of programs that stream free. (I didn’t spend that long trying to figure it out, so I may be wrong).

I am on the fence about whether to pay $39 to keep getting the 2 day shipping for free. I may succumb around Christmas time and decide to go for it. It is pretty handy, especially for the procrastinators of the world…

Rodney, I thought the streaming tv was not free for the free period but became free when the free period ended and the $39/year period started? (Our account just switched to the $39.) I haven’t tried it.

They really got me with the year of free Prime (which we all use, through my daughter’s student membership). I love Prime and now I’m spoiled; I would really miss it. I would have even paid $79 for it. :o

I would pay the thirty some books for the renewal. It’s really worth it and the whole family can benefit

^^nice screen name…lol

Anyway, we contacted Amazon Customer Service (did I mention before how much I LOVE this company?) and they responded within hours…

The Prime instant streaming video is for all the movies in their library BUT not for all the TV shows; apparently the networks restrict that

I’m with Midwest Mom; prime has really been amazing on many levels for us…

and for those of you who are living on a campus without a car, the subscribe and save is awesome as well…for cereal, personal products etc…

Just discovered that we had to pay the $39 to renew his membership for the year. Be careful and UNCHECK the auto renewal, as it will then auto renew after that, and possibly at the full rate (well, my s will have graduated by the time its time to renew, and I dont want to pay $79 for prime.)

^^thanks jym; will do…will they then notify at renewal to renew at the $39? if the student hasn’t graduated?

Yes, Rodney. DS got an email telling him the free year was expiring and gave him a window of time to renew at half price.

^^actually, the free membership doesn’t have a “do not renew” button…

One kid has a free membership

The other has the $39 one (with video streaming)…

I was only able to disable the auto-renew on the $39 one as your post describes (I guess the free one will get an email as you state)…

Thanks again…

I just realized that thefree one can share the video streaming with the other one…yippee!!!

Cool!!

My s’s share the one Prime account since older s doesnt qualify as a student anymore (yippee!). I just looked at the account and under “my account” it had “free student account” . I somehow fenagled to the “manage my accounts” page and thats where I found the auto-renew, just under the confirmation of our payment today. I changed it to “do not auto renew”. If they would auto renew at $39 I’d keep it, but I am doubting they will ,especially if he doesnt go to grad school next year and loses an .edu email address.

My older son got an account last summer (July 2010). When his expired he received an offer to renew for $39. It did NOT auto-renew. We signed my younger son up this July (2011) and he got free shipping for 12 months. In looking at their website it does appear that their offer has now changed to 6 months free shipping. Bummer! I am glad that we signed up last month!
