For instance, is it extremely difficult/impossible to work on the school paper? Or get an internship?

Anyone? Maybe someone could talk about opp. in their own dept. and how competitive such things are for them?

Sorry, just really want to know, I am going to call j-advisors today, it’s just that I doubt they’ll tell the truth like a student or maybe parent would.

Suggestion: Take a look at the Daily Texan and ask some of the students on staff about their experiences.

So I called UT Austin’s j-school and basically it was just me talking and the director agreeing with me. Not very helpful, and I felt like she just wanted to get the conversation over with. For anyone who wants to know what she said the jist of it is she agreed that most students who get stuffed published in the daily texan are juniors and seniors and they also get internships at that level as well. When I asked about competition when it comes to getting stuffed published she was pretty vague, I told her that with the number of students at UT’s j-school I would expect a lot of competition, and she was like “well our students get published left and right”, which makes sense since there are so many but that doesn’t tell me anything about the competition. I was basically looking for can I just work hard and expect to get published, or am I going to have to go off the deep end and burn others submissions and try to become the editor’s pet or something? (I don’t actually think that might be how it is, just trying to show 2 different levels of "competitiveness.) The only useful info I found out was that I don’t have to take the word processing or GSP tests, those are actually for after your freshman year as a “pre-journalism” student, and after you take those you’re classified as an actual journalism major. Also, there’s no facebook or anything like that for connecting with other journalism students but I was told there might be blogs that I could google. Also, many of the j-school organizations are defunct according to their website. (Someone can correct me if I’m wrong.) So if anyone out there wants to connect with journalism students you’d have to look on facebook or ask a friend at UT to find you one, which is what I did, since I don’t have a facebook. (I know shocking!)
