Do subject tests matter?

I took APWH and got a 4 on the ap test. I didn’t know about subject tests until about a year later, but as soon as I found out about them I took the World History subject test and got an awful score (550). I can not tell you how much I regret wasting that year in between.
Anyway, I’m interested in retaking the WH subject test along with French w/listening and maybe Lit, but is it worth the effort? Do colleges (mainly UC’s) really care about subject tests or are they just “accessories” on college apps?

They can make a big difference depending upon school. Look at what each school requires. Some allow the ACT and then don’t require the SAT2s but some want either the SAT or ACT with 1 or 2 subject tests. If you are going for STEM, there are some schools that want Math and a science.

SAT Subject tests below 700 are mere accessories. Scores over 700 are appreciated. UC’s do not require SAT Subject tests, but they are recommended for certain majors at certain campuses.
