Do Summer Camps Increase Admission Likelihood?

I’m not really referring to “camps” in the traditional out-doorsy sense, but more like programs at a local community college, school, or rec center.
Obviously going to camp isn’t anything to extraordinary, but can it help an application? For instance, if a potential Communications major attended a 5 day summer program called “The Power of Positive Communication” at a local school would it help? And if it does make a difference, would it be a significant one, or just a “meh” one (especially in the context of Ivys and very competitive schools)? Would that information even be included on an application?

Just looking for some advice here. Thanks in advance

Like any extracurricular activity or volunteer service, it is viewed subjectively, unlike GPA and test scores.

That being said, the camp alone will not increase your likelihood of admission, but its impact on you can help admission officers perceive you better holistically. It’ll demonstrate interest in a specialized area and show that you didn’t waste you summer break doing meaningless activities.

As for ivies, almost all of the applicants will have done some sort of meaningful summer activity. Many will have attended camps that are selective as some of the ivies themselves (RSI, SSP, etc.). Chances are, the adcoms won’t go “WOW,” but it’ll certainly shape who you are.

Nevertheless, I am in no way discouraging you from attending–you should, in fact, take part in what interests you–I am simply informing you that it’s weight in determining whether or not your application is dropped in the admit pile is minuscule.

Thanks for the well written and explained advice.
