Do super-selective colleges read all applications?

are some just tossed or quickly discounted for low Stand. test score or low GPA? I just don't know how colleges handle the increasing volume of applicants?

as a person who is pretty cynical, i will say that the answer is probably no. and they probably skim a bunch of stuff too, so worrying about that one grammar mistake is stupid (although i’d be guilty of that too)

maybe there’s this one super diligent school that does, but i would say most don’t

The Dean of Columbia visited at my son’s school and he said they read every word of every app right to the final sentence on the last page (he jokingly said how it would be awful to miss the “P.S.” at the end alerting the admissions team to the fact that the dean was his uncle. They hire many additional people (alumni) to help read at this time.

I would say every application is read. Can you imagine the bad publicity that would ensue if a school was caught toss applications without reading them based on GPA or test scores?

I don’t think so. There are some applicants who apply for fun (drawing a swastika on their Common Application essay or something like that).

Out of 30,000+ applicants, it can happen.

i believe an article in duke’s newspaper quoted the dean of admissions as saying that they didn’t read half the applications. i’m not completely certain about this though (since i didn’t apply and the article’s quite old) but if you do a little google search, you might be able to find it

I think they read them all, but only some get moved up the ladder to be read by the admissions committee. Most are read by low paid clerks.

They read them all. Remember that you paid 60 - 80 $ for the apps so their obligated to read everything.

Do people seriously pay $70 just to do that?

^^

There are fee waivers…and i can definitely see someone doing something similar lol.
