Do supplemental essays have to be written like your main essay?

You know what I mean? Your common app essay has to be beautifully written with lots of metaphors, etc…what about the supplemental essays? I feel as though so far my supplemental essays are very straightforward and don’t try to impress the reader (not in a bad way, just that they aren’t trying to do anything but answer the question). Is this how it should be?

It depends on the length of the supplemental essays. They’re usually a lot shorter, so there isn’t as much room to be very flowery. Supplement essay prompts also ask you more straightforward questions like what you want to study or why you’re interested in the school. There is no right or wrong to how you approach the supplements but I do think it’s common for them to be more to-the-point than the Common App essay.

Arguably I feel my supplement to Hopkins is more metaphoric than my common app. Stop worrying about what the colleges want…be you and let them accept you.
