Do teacher recs matter?

how much do teacher recs matter in terms of getting in?

my chem teacher gave me a bunch of goods on the checklist.

actually, it was mostly goods. haha

and she is indian so the written part probably wasn't that great either
she doesn't discriminate between commas and periods. they can be used interchangeably.

so yeah how bad is it if one of your recommendations blows

I think recs can give you a big edge if they are good. i dont know what it says if they are mediocre.

Basically everything counts with schools as selective as stanford, but i dont think 1 so-so rec will hurt you.

heyy its neal. how's it going man? didn't know you were applying to stanford too ^^.

(this is norman from cinci)

The way you worded that was really hitty. I'm not sure if you meant it the way you worded it... "She is Indian so the written part probably wasn't that great either."

I'm Indian. And I write. Well.

i'm bengali, and i'm damn proud of my writing ability.
power to south asian literary geniuses.

lol, her/his indian teacher is not native to the country, thus...

I'm sure they don't care how well written the recs are. What matters is what they say about you. And also, according to stanford, recs are "very important," up there with test scores, GPA, and essays.

In fact, right before the admission decisions were mailed out, my english teacher and my councillor (two of my recommenders) were called by Stanford. Apparently, the admissions board asked questions about what kind of person I was, etc. Needless to say, that was stressful/exciting.

i'm indian. i write fairly well.

Jojo, are you sure about that???

That's what I thought he meant, I was just making sure he knew he sounded a bit on the racist side.

hey, i didn't mean to rip all the indians out there and i'm sorry if it came across like that

i'm just saying that my teacher is definitely can't write very well
and she's indian

Recs are VERY IMPORTANT!!! I would put them almost as high as the essays.

lol.. ashveer, I'm hella sure that's what he meant... I am telepathic

^^ Congrats! That's tryptophantastic!!!

XD

I've been waiting to say that...

"That's tryptophantastic" - that would've confused me last week. But just today, I learned about tryptophan.. ho ho ho... can't fool me nomoe.. ok this is when i start feeling like a nerdette

whoaaa i had an indian chem teacher last year. :)

wow..ppl getting a bit defensive here. i'm sure he just meant that his indian teacher grew up in india and wasn't great at english grammar.

That's the suspicion we had, and the conclusion we came to...

"And also, according to stanford, recs are "very important," up there with test scores, GPA, and essays."

Only test scores are important at Stanford. If the other factors matter at all, they do so under the towering shadow of "test scores."

haha wow ^ crazy. I hope some bad grammar in the rec is OK because I want my mentor to write me some for other schools and let's just say her grammar isn't stellar...

they wont hurt you. ben jones of mit said that if your teach recs are lame "switch the name" recs then they wont count it against you. btw: dont get annoyed that he said that his teacher isnt that good at writing.

my uncle is a indian mathamatics teacher and his english isn't wonderful. its not his first language. he speaks perfectly in 3 other languages, i think its ok if he doesnt speak english as well.

the op is right in that people who are not native speakers dont speak the language as well. if his chem teacher is indian id assume she spoke great hindi, but not great english. sure there are exceptions, but out of the 1 billion people id say not even .1 percent of them speak english as well as a native speaker. not that there arn't non-native speakers who speak as well as, or even better then native speakers out there, they are just rarer.

so guys 2 points. to the op, dont worry. stanford wont hold that against you. also to everyone else. and to everyone else, dont be so quick to jump on the (accuse someone of) racism bandwagon.

Omg! i sound like that rick reily ariticle when he supported the coach who said "we lost [the football game] because the other team had more black kids" yikes!

id assume that no one smart enough or concerned with their life enough to be on cc applying to stanford would be stupid enough to be a racist bigatory jack***

In response to pessimist: Stanford rejects more than half of the perfect score applicants... Puh-leeze, one thing that set Stanford apart from the Ivy league in the past is that it is not a test-score driven. Go back to the cornell board. XD
