how much do teacher recs matter in terms of getting in?

my chem teacher gave me a bunch of goods on the checklist.

actually, it was mostly goods. haha

and she is indian so the written part probably wasn't that great either
she doesn't discriminate between commas and periods. they can be used interchangeably.

so yeah how bad is it if one of your recommendations blows

The way you worded that was really hitty. I'm not sure if you meant it the way you worded it... "She is Indian so the written part probably wasn't that great either."

I'm sure they don't care how well written the recs are. What matters is what they say about you. And also, according to stanford, recs are "very important," up there with test scores, GPA, and essays.

In fact, right before the admission decisions were mailed out, my english teacher and my councillor (two of my recommenders) were called by Stanford. Apparently, the admissions board asked questions about what kind of person I was, etc. Needless to say, that was stressful/exciting.

"That's tryptophantastic" - that would've confused me last week. But just today, I learned about tryptophan.. ho ho ho... can't fool me nomoe.. ok this is when i start feeling like a nerdette

haha wow ^ crazy. I hope some bad grammar in the rec is OK because I want my mentor to write me some for other schools and let's just say her grammar isn't stellar...

they wont hurt you. ben jones of mit said that if your teach recs are lame "switch the name" recs then they wont count it against you. btw: dont get annoyed that he said that his teacher isnt that good at writing.

my uncle is a indian mathamatics teacher and his english isn't wonderful. its not his first language. he speaks perfectly in 3 other languages, i think its ok if he doesnt speak english as well.

the op is right in that people who are not native speakers dont speak the language as well. if his chem teacher is indian id assume she spoke great hindi, but not great english. sure there are exceptions, but out of the 1 billion people id say not even .1 percent of them speak english as well as a native speaker. not that there arn't non-native speakers who speak as well as, or even better then native speakers out there, they are just rarer.

so guys 2 points. to the op, dont worry. stanford wont hold that against you. also to everyone else. and to everyone else, dont be so quick to jump on the (accuse someone of) racism bandwagon.

Omg! i sound like that rick reily ariticle when he supported the coach who said "we lost [the football game] because the other team had more black kids" yikes!

id assume that no one smart enough or concerned with their life enough to be on cc applying to stanford would be stupid enough to be a racist bigatory jack***

In response to pessimist: Stanford rejects more than half of the perfect score applicants... Puh-leeze, one thing that set Stanford apart from the Ivy league in the past is that it is not a test-score driven. Go back to the cornell board. XD
