Hey, I live in Texas, and would really like to take advantage of the cheap medical schools hear, but most of the colleges I'm most interested in are out of state. Do the med schools care?

nope, as long as you’re a texas resident

I think people have posted on CC that Texas med schools give a priority to Tx students.

but that doesn’t mean that you can’t apply elsewhere.

Where are you interested?

I have the same question. Would it be in any way harmful to go OOS and apply to Texas meds as a Texas resident? bigreddawgie answered the question, I believe, but I want to be sure that there’s absolutely no disadvantage. If there is, what would it be and how much of a difference would it make?

EDIT:
I’m not sure if many people will know on this forum, but is there an age limit for the dependency rule to establish residency in Texas? (being dependent on a parent/guardian who is of texas resident status, and thus inheriting that status) Can I be older than 19 and have that rule apply to me even if I don’t live with my parents and am in a different state?

Not true. As long as your in-state you can go to college anywhere. Thats like saying that UTMB discriminates against Rice students (private school not a Tx state school) who are in-state, there is no evidence for this.

You just need to be a resident of Texas…where you went to school as an undergrad is not an impediment to admission…look at the profiles of entering classes at the various schools if you need more verification.

mom2collegekids, you may be thinking of the fact that state medical schools in Texas have to admit a majority of Texas residents.
I’m glad that I can still be a Texas “resident” but go to college elsewhere.

I misunderstood the question…LOL

It’s fine to go to undergrad elsewhere, you keep your Texas residency.

For some bizarre reason, I was thinking that he was asking if a Texas resident would not be permitted to apply to OOS med schools.

Now I realize I totally misunderstood.

Is anyone familiar with the dependency rule that I stated and if it applies for students over the age of 19. Does it refer to financially dependent or legally dependent? I’ll call a medical school with a hypothetical situation and figure it out if no one on here knows.

Viggy…do your parents live in Texas? If you (the student) are in another state for undergrad education purposes only, then you keep your Texas residency.
