Do the college board emails and letters mean anything?

Hi,

I get a lot of emails and letters from colleges that have gotten my email and address when I took the psat. I got a few from colleges I am interested in such as Fordham, however the only thing that they say is something like "request our guide"

What do these mean? Are they based on any of my academic stats? Possibly my psat scores?
Oes it mean I can get into that college if I am getting a letter from them through this?

I get so many I want to unsuscribe from them on the college board website, and would it bad stupid to unsubscribe, like miss out on getting into a college?

thanks

John

Essentially they do mean nothing, some people get ones from Harvard, but that does not mean Harvard wants them or is guaranteeing a direct admit. Rather it is an attempt by the university to entice you to applying to their school. Thus their number of applicants increase as well as income from the application fee. However, colleges do not necessarily send letters to every individual. If this was done you would not feel special enough to apply, so you do have to meet some kind of qualification to receive a letter.

I too got these from several different colleges. My inbox and mailbox have letters from obscure Nevada schools, to Cornell and Columbia. They don’t mean anything. They are just advertisements really. They mostly offer you take an online quiz about your learning personality and surprise, you would fit right in at their school. They all often tell you that you can receive a guide based on college search secrets. I requested one from Duke university just because i felt i had to do one. I havent gotten it back, but I assume it is trash.
