Do the majors you put on your app help/hurt your chances of admission??

Okay, so I will be applying to colleges this year, and something's been really confusing me for a while.

When colleges ask you for an intended major on your app, I figured it was just to figure out what you were interested in. But then lately, I keep hearing more and more stories about how putting down the most common major at a college hurts you, and then a girl i met a few years ago claimed that putting "pre-law" on her Columbia app caused her to be rejected.

I really don't understand this major deal. And what's it mean to apply directly to a major? What kind of majors do you want to directly apply to? And what's it mean to "get a major" freshmen year? Do you fill out a separate app for a major you want? I thought we still had 2-3 more years to decide this!

yo I'm curious too now, I dont know my major yet and I'm senior in high school, ppl say u can chooosein sophmore year of college

depends on the school, i know for cornell it can help or hurt because you apply to a certain school (engineering or art) same with duke (there is eng. and arts & sciences) etc.
