I've read some things saying that because of that proposition that passed a few years back, the UC's read your application or essay without a name or ethnic information. Anyone know if that's how it is?

there was an optional information section on the application, nearby the scholarships section.. if you marked something, they'll see it, though they claim not to take it into consideration..

well if your essay is about growing up as an african american then its quite obvious what your ethnicity is.

Yeah had I known that they couldn't see it anywhere else I probably would have mentioned something. It's all right though maybe my grades can still get me in. Anyone think a 3.57 with TAP will get me in to UCLA for bus/econ

I was actually reading an article about AA and UCs. Marking the optional information about Ethnicity is only for statistical purposes. Admissions Officers/Readers/Evaluators are not allowed to be legally disclosed any information about Ethnicity/Race. JetForcegminix is correct though, the de facto method to get around this is by mentioning Ethnicity/Race in your personal statements.

kso: Others on CC from past years have gotten into Biz Econ @ UCLA with that GPA + TAP. There are other variables beyond just GPA and TAP. If you completed the Pre-Reqs, Pre-req GPA ( I want to say this applies to Biz Econ ), ECs, Personal Statements. Just for reference, last year's average admit GPA for Biz Econ was 3.82.

Your chances are still pretty low since your GPA is not as quite close to the average even though you have TAP.

:-/ For some idiotic reason, I failed to mention that I was Cambodian on my personal statement. Cambodian! Talk about uber minority. Anyways, nijikon5, I was wondering if you knew last year's UCLA average admit GPA for Econ (as oppose to Biz Econ). I'm working with a 3.7 and I feel like that's kinda reaching? Maybe? Say no please lol.

Last year's average admit GPA for Econ was also... drum roll ... 3.82 lol... Same as Biz Econ. However, the 2006 and 2007 average was 3.72-3.76. Depending on your Pre-Reqs, TAP, and essays. I'd say GPA wise alone, you are very competitive, good luck.

I thought Cambodian was considered Asian and thus an over-represented minority?

Race wise, Cambodians are Asians. I personally don't know how represented/under represented specific Southeastern Asian countries/ethnic groups are at the UCs.

Grey is right.

How often do I get to say that? :D

I have to agree with these people on the Cambodia thing. That is far from an "uber minority". Asians are over represented at a lot UC campuses. I mean you wouldn't consider a white guy with ancestors from Liechtenstein to be a minority would you? I mean the guy is Liechtensteinian!!! I have to say, that's considerably more rare than Cambodian

Statistically in California, yes.
Whites Now A Minority in California

Well, I meant by UC demographics whites and Asians are definitely not going to get any extra special attention for their ethnicity. I know that the UCs say they don't take ethnicity into account, but my bet would be in reality Latino and Black students get a little bump during admission decisions to ensure the campus keeps a politically correct appearance in their demographics

"to ensure the campus keeps a politically correct appearance in their demographics "

Then it's not working!

They can only do so much. They can't make it completely match the actual population graphics. They do as much as they can before it is excessively catering to minority populations. They can't force minorities to get good grades, but they can bump the few with decent grades.

i'm pretty sure im the biggest minority (oxymoron?) for UC's. i'm from the republic of georgia, and know probably maybe 4 other georgians in LA.

That article is a bunch of tripe. Whites are still the plurality - the most common race by far.

"but they can bump the few with decent grades. "

Well they didn't bump MY daughter, and she had a UC GPA better than 4.1, and an SAT better than 2000k. Plenty of leadership, EC's ect. And I can tell you more stories like that. ....So yeah....I'm bitter...

Your daughter didn't get into one UC?
