My counselor keeps insisting that I have to take the Math IIC test to get into a UC school. These schools are not high-priority (although the prices are definitely right) and it didn't say it was required on the website. Anyone know for sure? I'm not going to be a math or engineering major, by the way.

No, the 2 SAT II Subject Tests required for UC Admissions can be of your choice.

Actually, it depends on your intended major and the campuses you applying to. For certain math, science or engineering related disciplines, certain campuses will state "recommended" SAT Subject Test scores. Be advised that UC will now only accept Math Level 2 (no longer accepting Math Level 1). So if you are NOT intending any Math, Engineering or Science-related major (i.e., English or History), then you can take whatever two Subject Tests you think you will do well on. If you are, then check with that campus(es) for "recommended" Subject Tests.

Also, because I know the question will come up, "recommended" means that they REALLY, REALLY want you to take these tests, and if you do not, somebody else will, and the admissions evaluators will think that these OTHER applicants are more serious about being accepted than those who do NOT take the "recommended" tests. Technically-speaking, your counselor is not correct, but in effect, s/he may be suggesting what is in an applicant's best interests, again depending on intended major.

Here are examples:

UC Berkeley: For Chem/Engineering schools: Math Level 2 and a Science test related to the intended major;

UCLA: For School of Engineering and Applied Science: Math Level 2 and a Science test related to the intended major;

UC Irvine: For Engineering School: Math Level 2

UCSD: For Engineering, Biological or Physical Science: Math Level 2 and a Science test related to intended major;
