the only interest they track essentially is your ED app.

The level of interest issue is now addressed on the Common Data Set starting 2005-2006. Here's a thread on the subject w/ list of colleges, which I believe covers several of those listed above:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=145077

Davidson lists level of interest as "considered" in the admissions process, Williams lists it as "not considered" & I don't recall the others, although some on your list do not have publicly available CDS'.

Emory definitely tracks interest. They are known for this. It is listed as "considered" in the institutional data. In truth it is a fairly major component in their application process. The Admissions office asks all visitors to sign in. When my son filled out his application, he was asked to check off items on a list identifying his contact with the school. These ranged from campus visits and interviews with profs to meetings at his high school with the regional rep.

If you can't visit Emory, or would prefer to wait until later in the process, go to their website and request the video visit (which is very good, btw); this is considered an indication of interest. You can also find out who the adrep for your region is and check out his/her schedule, then try to meet up when he/she is in your area.

You can also indicate interest by applying early (it's non-binding) for the Emory Scholars program. I think the deadline is sometime in October, and there are additional essays required - if you do a good job on the app, you'll be demonstrating interest. Semi-finalists for the program receive early notification of acceptance to the school (sometime in February, I think).

We're about 1000 miles from Atlanta, and my d didn't visit. She did request the video and do the early application, and was accepted.

orjr-- I erred on my comment about Davidson above. Their latest CDS leaves the "level of applicant's interest" line blank, not "considered" as I wrongly mentioned above. Reference CDS section C7:
http://www2.davidson.edu/administration/admin_docs/0506cds_C.pdf

My opinion is that Davidson would consider interest to some degree.

I also wanted to confirm that Emory definitely tracks interest. My D applied and experienced everything mentioned by Cami215 above.

She was ultimately accepted and HAD done numerous things that showed interest. We'll never know whether she would have been accepted if she had not. But if you're seriously interested in this school, it would seem they expect you to show "serious interest" beyond just submitting the application.

I believe Davidson would want you to show interest. They want to know that you are applying to other schools that they will compare to (too many Duke applicants throwing in a Davidson, too). Duke and Dartmouth will not put much weight on interest, other than ED. Trinity and Southwestern will probably track interest. Amherst and Williams seemed to want to know that you had visited, part. Williams, but I'm not sure that interest would play much of a role in decision-making.
