When I filled out the housing contract, I didn't get asked any questions about my preferences (like type of music, whether I wake up early or not, etc.). Did I forget to fill something out??

No, you didn't forget anything. We wondered about that, too. But apparently the process is quite random, as you say. My son did end up with a really nice roommate, however, so it worked OK for him. And they seem to have extra rooms, at least in my son's dorm (Forest), so those who don't like their roommate can probably move into a single, if they don't mind paying more.

so if you don't like your room mate theres no way to switch without having to pay more for a single?

we can request roommates, rite?

yes u can request room mates

mike321, I am sure there are ways to switch roommates. It's probably not a big deal. I just know of a couple kids who moved into singles after the first few weeks due to roommate problems, so I know that can be an option. A roommate trade probably works fine, too.

you can request to move...there are double rooms available. either they will move you in with someone new, you can request to move with someone you know, you can move into a vacant double and say you'd take a roommate at any time and pay the cheaper rate, live in a double yourself and pay a LOT more, or move into a single. the possibilities are endless!!

It worked out great for my son. After a few weeks, his roommate decided he wanted a single and moved across the hall. (no disagreement between roommates; he just wanted more space.) My son agreed to take in another roommate. However, the university apparently never found one for him, so he has had the room to himself for most of the year without having to pay extra for it. Pretty nice!
