Ok, so I know that they have both indoor and outdoor tennis courts and U Penn, but do they charge for either (for students)?
And I'm sure that I won't make the varsity, and probably not even club. So would a rec player like me get to use the courts that often?
Thanks in advance!

I think they charge for indoor ones. I know it can be hard to get reservations sometimes.

this is probably pretty silly, but what's the weather in philly like? as in, are the outside courts unusable all late fall/winter/early spring? (here in NH they're snowed in for about a third of the year...)

People play pretty late into the fall and start up again pretty early in the spring. Philly's never too snowy, but we do get a lot of rain. I actually don't know if they officially close them in the winter.

Also, keep in mind that these courts are going to be torn out in the next few years as part of the postal land expansion, and everything could change.

^ Indeed, everything WILL change, significantly for the BETTER. Improvement of athletic facilities is a major component of the current $3.5 billion capital campaign, and Penn already has received a $7.5 million donation for a new outdoor tennis center to be built on the old postal lands by 2009 or 2010, "which will be new home of the Penn tennis teams and provide the University community with a facility to meet the high demand for court time."

Phase I of the athletic facilities improvement program also includes renovation of the Levy Indoor Tennis Center:

Here's an interesting 11-minute video promoting the athletics component of the capital campaign, which specifically discusses tennis facilites at about 7:00:

$15 dollars/year for membership at Levy Tennis. That gets you reservation privileges: free outdoor courts, and $7.50 (I think)/hour/person indoors. If anyone at Penn's looking for a hitting buddy, drop me a line.
