Does USC read your application and if you're admitted pass it on to the department you chose and let them make their decision or do both the school itself and the department read it at the same time?

i think the admissions office makes its decision first... and if you're accepted into the school, your application is passed on to individual departments to see if they'll accept you into the major(s) you wanted.

That's what i thought since the other way around would be wasting time.
The thing is I'm certain I won't get into USC itself but the department I wanted to major in sent an email asking for some papers to complete my application.
Hence my thought, why would you want that since I wont get into the school?? (not that I asked them that thou)

i asked the admissions councelor who visited our school last october

he said that there's a total of 3 people evaluating ur application at different times. For example, when ur app gets passed the first person, it gets handed to the 2nd one. If he/she is unsure, u'll get passed down for further evaluation anyways. If any 1 of the 3 do not like ur application, u're immediately out.

It's kinda harsh how they do it that way.. the 3 people don't have a chance to talk to each other, but who knows, maybe one person will give u benefit of the doubt.

Yea, that does sound harsh, why not talk it over like rational adults =P

I just got curious to why it would be passed on to the department since I haven't gotten in to USC(and i'm sure i won't, sats too low (And i'm not talking CC's "oh no I only have 2000 on my sat" kind of low))
Having them reviewing it sounds like a waste of time

wow how can they just do that? it seems as if they aren't giving people a chance, what if one of the people reviewing your app is really grumpy, or just happened to be looking at an incredibly amazing app. and then see's yours (which may be great but not as amazing) and rejects it straight away. but i mean at least the no scholarship letter said "we are still reviewing your application and you are still be considered for admission to USC" so that must mean that at least three liked it right? maybe they're sending our apps to other reviewers?

haha.. look at me here, SAT 1900, GPA unweighted 3.6

can't say i'm the cream of the crop but i'm still applying, loud and proud :)

See if they chose to do it one person at a time, it's got downfalls and benefits. One downfall is that if the person really does not like u, he or she won't have the opportunity to negotiate with other admission officers, who might have given u a chance..

The benefit is that if the person is benevolent towards your application, he/she MIGHT just give u a chance and pass u on... however, if that benevolent person is judging u along with 3 other officers, they probably would have rejected u all together.

i'm going to go freak out now lol

I would have been happy with 1900 ^^;;
Just glad I noticed the mail the department sent, I was about to delete it thinking it was spam, but I got worried cause the spam mail knew my last name.
unfortunatly it lighted alittle hope in me that things might not be as bad as I thought and I really didn't want that, makes the fall from being rejected so much worse. I just started thinking about why they would have passed it on if I was already out of the running. Didn't sound sane to do that to the admissions people that already have so many applications to look through.

Didn't know you got a denial of scholarship letter too....seems I gotta wait until 1st of april for all my mail =/

It seems like everyone got the no scholarship letter if you applied by December 10 and didn't get a scholarship. Maybe if the first admissions reader liked you but the second or third reader was still uncertain that's what triggers the other letter requesting mid-year grades? It seemed like not everyone got the second letter in some of the threads. I keep hoping that is a promising sign (since I got both letters). This is agony!

If you're referring to me, it wasn't mid-year (international student)
I knew they sent out the rejections late but it seems strange not to send the scholarship rejection, Maybe it just got stuck in customs...5 more weeks...

"I keep hoping that is a promising sign"
I hope that my application being passed on to the department is good news

the department you applied to, sent you a confirmation email? sorry i couldn't really understand what you were saying. which department did you apply to?

Cinema Production, The sent me a mail asking for the TEOFL test.

But since I hadn't heard anything from USC itself I found this odd.

haha how ironic, i applied for cinema production too

so did chappa I believe...

Good luck both of you, unless you've already heard from them that is.
I had pretty much moved on and in the midst of writing a new script so their mail kinda threw me off alittle.

thanks, i haven't heard yet, i'm pretty on edge though, my SAT score is pretty low too though, so no worries, I completely understand
*you should go look through the posts on the cinematic arts school, may answer some of your questions or ease your mind

let's not worry guys :)

when we get in, we can all laugh about these moments of intense stress and anxiety.

i meant, when YOU guys all get in, YOU guys can laugh about these moments of intense stress and anxiety.

i might sit in a corner and cry with my rejection letter.

s'all good though ;)

lol postalxservice,

I'll be right there with you at the REJECT CORNER! :D

I got the no scholarship letter and a request for mid year....i hope i passed some level of admission between the three people....

I feel that all of us need some sort of relief...while I cannot provide that...I give you all a quote just to think about and feel a little better about all of this...
