my essay that i'm using for the common app is about my future career and how i came to be interested in it as well as how i am suited for it. is this a fairly common essay topic? could it perhaps set me apart?

if anyone would be gracious enough to read my essay, please PM me. i would prefer parents as readers. thanks!

OH! Someone please answer this question… I was thinking about writing about my future career as well (still haven’t written it). It was one potential topic.

I’m assuming its a fairly common essay because most people’s dream/aspiration is to be employed in their dream job. I actually wrote on this same topic for my uc essay which asks about my aspirations, but changed it up for my common app. However, if your essay is well written, it will be a positive towards your admission but the topic itself will not set you apart.

thanks for your input. i’m hoping mine is as good as i hope it is! has anyone else used this topic?

When I was looking at essays last year, I came across one on Johns Hopkins’ “essays that worked” page that addressed the writer’s future career in a unique way that I really liked. It’s the last one on the page, if you’re interested.
There’s nothing wrong with having your career as your common essay topic. Is it a common topic though? Yes. Will the topic itself make you stand out? Probably not. Can you still make an essay that sets you apart even with this topic? Definitely.

Many people say “I wanna become a _______<– insert career when I grow up” but realize that many interests and goals change as they explore through college and find themselves.

I’m not necessarily trying to discourage you from this topic, but suggesting to be open to other topics as well. It definitely is plausible to write a unique essay while using this topic, but is it really the topic that best establishes your unique character?

Thank yall! And MapleLeaf, I’ll check out that website!
