Or has anyone done them on a weekend? I can't miss any school. Period.

Most boarding schools have appointments on Saturdays, but those are usually the first to fill up. If you haven’t called to make your tour/interview appointment, I recommend calling as soon as possible.

Does your application have to be in before you interview/tour? Or can you interview early, then send in your application?

No, your application does NOT have to be completed before you interview. Some schools have a pre-interview form they’d like you to fill out - but it’s generally an easy one-page form.

If you can’t miss school, you can interview on a Saturday or holiday. You’ve already missed Columbus Day and Veterans’ Day, but Martin Luther King Day is still a possibility (Monday, January 17). As was already mentioned, Saturdays fill up fast - if you want a Saturday appointment, call the school as soon as you can. Maybe they can put you on a waitlist, in case another Saturday appointment cancels.

Worst case scenario, you can interview by Skype if you have to . . . but most schools would discourage that if you live close by. Keep in mind that you can visit the schools on your own if you want to - just go with your parents on a Saturday or Sunday and wander around the campus. It’s better than nothing.

Also, some schools still do interviews even after their deadline for submitting applications. So ask if that’s a possibility also . . . it would give you a little more time.

Some schools only interview on weekdays. Most schools will post their interview schedule somewhere on the website. Some schools will hold open houses, which usually offer the opportunity to tour the school.

Look at your current school’s schedule. Many schools have Professional Days, when they don’t have classes. Make a list of those days, or have a calendar handy when you call boarding schools. Sometimes there are cancellations, even if the school’s schedule is full.

Call as soon as possible. Tomorrow is a great time to start.

I think applicants really miss out if they visit on a weekend and unable to see a typical school day. Given it’s a place you might spend 4 years, it’s probably worth taking a day off from your current school.

I know at Exeter I see at least 5 tours everyday of the week including Saturdays and Sundays. You are free to tour anytime.
