one week till decision day--my D received nice scholarship offers/grants from
3 different top 50 schools- Wondering if she decides to transfer at some point, and approaches those schools again, is it common to get a similar offer,
or does the money just go to freshman applicants...

I’m pretty sure most non-need based merit awards are reserved for freshmen.

Are the grants you referred to based on need (financial aid awards) or are they considered merit awards?

If the school meets 100% of need for all students, yes. They are far less likely to get merit aid though and lots of schools in this economy are looking for full pay transfers.

i mean scholarships (presidential) and others…merit based…
…although one school listed the award as “grant” .

For most schools, merit aid is designed to woo the top students who could go somewhere more “selective” and prestigious.

Please don’t tell her that if she changes her mind and decides to go to Wonderful U after a year at Happiness College, that she would have the same scholarships and you could afford it. Assume that as a transfer student she would be paying full freight. If need-based aid is part of the formula, that would be different.

I know three students who transferred back home to small private LACs. All three recieved the merit aid packages that were originally extended to them as prospective freshman.
